Greatest Rock Bands Of All Time?

Shangri-La is awesome. My personal favorites would probably be The Ragpicker's Dream and Sailing to Philadelphia. I can't really choose between those two.

Also razor, it ain't my fault my favorite rock bands are prog rock bands!!

i'll listen to the album i purchased and if i like it a lot i'll pick up one of the 2 that yu really like

Not much to say that hasn't been said, except that I really like Bruce Springsteen. Never understood the hate he gets; Born to Run is an absolute rock classic, and The River is a beautiful album.

I'll just give a list without going into needless discussion about who is rock and who isn't or what band play more "rockin" then another band like others like to do.. only thing I will say is that rock is a ever expanding form of music since it's invention or formation in the 50's... This is my important/greatest list of all time and most have been said already. In no order of importance and including solo artists:

1. Stones
2. Beatles
3. Led Zep
4. Pink Floyd
5. Van Halen (Roth era)
6. The Doors
7. The Ramones
8. Hendrix
9. Janis Joplin
10. U2

1 Symphony X
2 Iron Maiden
3 KC and the Sunshine band
4 The Bee Gees
5 The Four Tops
6 Flock of Seagulls
7 Aretha Franklin
8 Jeff Beck
9 Britney Spears

"

1-2&3 - I'll throw the Stones, The Who and The Beatles a bone, they all at least began their careers as just rock bands. The Doors were acid rock/head music
4 Tom Petty
5 Bob Seager
6 John Melloncamp
7 Elvis - tuff call due to so much of his popularity coming from ballades that had little "rock" but his importance goes without saying
8 Dire Straights ? fairly true to the rock form
9 Buddy Holly - importance
10 The Guess Who

k, back to the topic. I'll add the Clash and Eagles to my list also...

I can't help but notice that no one has mentioned AC/DC

I also can't help but notice that razor hasn't mentioned Hendrix

Hendrix was far beyond the rock dude ! As with many others I would not so reduce him to a simple petty domestically shallow tag as rock

AC/DC abit heavy and aggressive to qualify as simply a "rock" band
Eagles is a good pick

It seems so far were up to a good 15 highly successful legitmate straight forward rock bands

Oh, and Can definitely, if they count.

Basically, anything vocally charged and/or with engaging beats and rhythms is awesome.Would be cool to get some recommendations based on that.

speaking of genesis did anyone get the new peter gabriel cd scratch my back? i like some of it and other times its sad and boring. the mans voice is still intact though. i can see this release making the bottom of my top 10 albums of 2010. of course this depends on how strong other releases are but so far i've been letdown a little this year. still new confirmed releases i have to get by:
ratt
flotsam and jetsam
jeff beck
jackyl
keel
slash
ringo starr
iron maiden

maybe's getting released this year are:
*the cult (talk is multiple 4 song e.p.'s being released this year)
*crosby, stills and nash- they were doing a covers album with rick rubin
*zz top- again working with rick rubin
*janes addiction- in the studio right now
*van halen- i have word these guys finished a new album but i'll wait until i see the official statement to get excited
*queensryche- in the studio soon but i guess early 2011 release
*jetboy- they released a great e.p. but since 3 of the 6 tunes are live versions of older songs i can count this e.p. in the best albums of 2010

I love the new Gabriel album. Some of the renditions are a bit awkward, but after a few listens I've come to think that it lends to the coherence of the album. It's a gorgeous release.

it is a grower. i just think that some of the songs need more orchestration and peter needs to let his voice wail more. as talented as he is an album of original material would have been better. really no need for a covers album. probably 2012 before an album of original material is released now. after the early 90's gabriel has really been slacking with the albums. only about 3 albums of original material since the early 90's

What genre is Hendrix then? And hard rock is not allowed? And aren't The Eagles country rock if we're going to get pedantic? Eh...

I place rock just above pop, nothing too heavy, or too bluesy, not heavily distorted, 0 abrasive qualities, not aggressive vocals or experimental, progressive, not pushing the borders, without the bubble gum and other gayeties of pop. Should be fairly self explanitory, rock is just rock. There are plenty of people over the years that like the lighter easier sound of "rock" but never took to the hard rocks bands, or too much blues or the experimental or progressive. A good representation of this is how FM radio over the years has structured their song lists toward specific demographics.

Pink Floyd
Van Halen (old, up to 1984)
Journey
Jimi Hendrix
Zeppelin
AC/DC
Guns N'Roses
Thin Lizzy

And a bit newer:

Black Stone Cherry
The Answer
The Hellacopters (you might not have heard of these guys but they're great, check them out)
Porcupine Tree (wouldn't class them as metal really, they're quite heavy in places but not THAT heavy)
