Growling

Oh lordy lordy lordy...

When growling, project from your gut. If you sing with your throat, you're going to blow your voice out right away. Don't expect to sound like Mikael though, it's damn near impossible to get that low...

Also, take singing lessons. It will give you much better stamina for growling.

Getting low isn't the problem (actually, getting high is), but I just need to learn how to get that "sound" from my voice. I wasn't a huge fan of growling... but then I downloaded The Drapery Falls video (live), and Mikael just amazed me. I can't really take singing lessons right now because my parents will only pay for my bass lessons... so I'd have to choose bass or vocals. (I don't plan on giving up bass, although I like singing better... if I could sing.) I think I might have thrown out my voice, anyways. For the last 2 weeks I haven't been able to sing or raise my voice at all. It might be a virus... but it's not strep. Any real signs to know if you just threw out your voice? I'm on antibiotics... so if it is an infection that should take care of it. Then I'll be back to my puppy-growls.

I've been growling for a little bit now.. and I might know the reason why nobody wants to tell you how it's done... because it's so damn hard to explain! Plus, every growler has his/her own way of doing it.. my growls feel like they're coming from the back of my throat.. along with my gut... keep on practicing.. you'll get it \m/

I've been told I sound like a mixture of Thomas Lindberg and the Singer from Kalmah (his name escapes me at this time)..but that was from my best friend and band mate.. that bastard better not have been lying!

My problem is stamina.. but i got some singing videos that will help me with breathing.. so hopefully everything will be good now.

Keep on trying, trust me \m/

I take singing lessons and I growl alot. Funny enough my singing teacher is a woman, but she knows how to sing and how to growl. I've been growling for quite a while now...I also used to be part of the green machine...so its like..yeh ;)

Firstly the deepness comes from the gut, the roar is the sound reverberating around your throat. Dont mistake the last bit as using your throat to get the complete sound, fucks your box up...

In order to get a good sound, you need to have a shitload of stamina, so i suggest getting a lit candle, take a deep breath and letting out the air until it is depleted and your almost dead, try doing this until u can get 40secs...

It increases your lung capacity.

So basically it comes from the diaphram...an example of a good singer is JMK from tool with the diaphragm shit.

Ermm...what else, yeh, there was something else...but ive forgotten...

oh, i remember...dont be afraid of going high...

One situation that comes to mind is when covering Black Sabbath - Iron Man, my voice is naturally low, and when It came to me recording the vocals, i had to sing abnormally high...it was really uncomfortable...to me, i sounded like a complete panzy, but it actually sounded good...so, yeh..

Same with credence.

Be relaxed... If you take it too tight, it looses its power...
And what comes to growling styles, I think Swedish way is more better than US way... Matti Kärki and L-G petrov are my faves... But also guys like John Tardy and Glen Benton are very original...
And how I growl? Listen from here (okay, it's more like shouting, but anyway... And oh yes, in "Taverna Satana" main vocals are made by our Drummer Womb Raider... And I think he's doing it better than me... Whatever...)
