GTA IV = best game ever

The only real open-ended game to waste your time on is Oblivion and Morrowind.

GTA was a fad.

Oblivion and Morrowind have some of the ugliest, most boring NPCs ever created. I've watched my friends play a lot of those games, and I'm always impressed with all the scenery and gameplay, but they seriously need to:

a) hire someone who can actually write character dialogue
b) hire someone who can draw faces that aren't nauseatingly ugly
c) completely revamp that shitty face generator they used in Oblivion

Of course, they could have made this problem less noticeable in Oblivion, but they opted to have the game automatically zoom in on every goddamn person you talk to for the duration of the conversation, so you basically have to shield your eyes every two minutes while you're in town.

For an example of much better NPC design and dialogue, see Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines. The commercial failure of the company that made that game is probably the greatest tragedy ever to happen to the gaming world.

GTA is hardly a fad... but, its rather unfortunate that its not, since it will be imitated many more times, and will forever be a stain upon the weak hearts of many politicians against violent video games. :p

I also agree with gari though... open ended isn't necessarily for everyone, at least when it comes to Morrowind and Oblivion. Its really apples to oranges, as the casual crowd will never go too far with that stuff. C'mon, it fucking swords, demons, and pretty fireballs.

I'm most excited about the multiplayer component for GTAIV. I don't expect it to keep me playing that much longer than I would the singleplayer, but theres always a chance it could be really good - it was pretty fun on the PSP.

I didn't realize ppl played games for face animation......

Vampire Bloodlines was a great game. It's too bad it was a commercial failure and plagued by so many problems (though there are community patches that fix most of them which are being updated even to this day). I've played through it three times atleast.

Troika, the company that made it consisted largely of former Black Isle Studios people (responsible for Fallout 1 & 2 and Planescape: Torment) who are sadly also pretty much defunct by now. It sucks to see studios like that go under.

I need to play Planescape Torment. I've always heard that was a great game, and of a similar gameplay style to Baldur's Gate, which I loved.

Another great developer that went under was Looking Glass Studios, who did the Thief and System Shock series - some of my all-time favorite games. Apparently some of the guys from that studio are behind a new game - BioShock - that's similar to System Shock, and will be coming out next month. That'll probably be my next game purchase, if hardware permits.

Yeah Looking Glass were brilliant. I loved System Shock 2, especially playing it cooperatively with friends. Bioshock looks like it will be interesting and unique as well.

Planescape Torment is one of the most well written RPG games ever. Incredible game that you definitely need to have played.

Since the other video games thread has fallen by the wayside, someone recommend a good RPG for PS2, preferably with a nice story. Traditional battle and leveling systems are okay, i.e. mash on attack until you win the random encounters.

Edit: D'oh. I'm blind.

Final Fantasy 10

I just remembered that my computer is too shit to be able to play modern computer games. Fuck. No Starcraft II.

You're kidding... all those CDs you buy and you can't spare a few hundred for a decent upgrade?

SC2 should be pretty well optimized though... but they can only go so far.

Omitting the last two mentioned... (not that I have anything against them)

Try the Xenosaga series (especially 2 and 3), Disgea series (2), Valkyrie Profile (Norse inspired rpgs ftw), Ys, Shadowhearts (both games)... and I heard the Shin Megami Tensei games are good but haven't got around to.

Those should cover the gameplay... and especially story. If not even 1/3... well, time to stop playing RPGs. :p

I know I can get FF X for $20. The odds of me shelling out $70 for a rare, but legendary game are rare. I'll have to scour the bargain bins. I've seen the first Xenosaga a bunch of times. I passed because I didn't really like Xenogears. I also bought Chrono Cross about a year ago, but it was a real chore to play. I probably only got about 10 hours in.

If you didn't like Xenogears, don't play Xenosaga.

Like I said, Suikoden 3 is a good bet, as well as the newest Suikoden, which I think is number 5.
