Wow great specific thread. Never been done before and very thought provoking.

EDIT: Sorry posted before there was a poll. I choose brutal simple riffs, but I love solos as well. Carcass (of course) has my favorite solos.

I prefer my brutal riffs to be not wholly-unmusical but not to be overtly melodic. I tend to enjoy some groovy riffs which one can rock out to with ease. I like solos which are melodic but can on occassion enjoy some mindless shredding. However, I have a low tolerance for high-pitched wankery which can tend to be irritating. Saying that, I prefer a light solo which takes on different themes and ends on a climactic resolution. When in a relaxed mood I might listen to something acoustic or otherwise clean guitar passages which are accompanied by the occassional vocal harmony, including light ballads and epic soundscapes. This of course is taking into account my love for the works of Opeth and various opuses contained in the highly varying black metal and death metal subgenres. Also there are some gems in the folk metal and singer-songwriter subgenres which I find to be quite enjoyable. Highly recommended... Thank you for your time and have a good night.

I don't really have a preference for a certain type of solo. But in terms of riffs, I like dark and/or emotive riffs. I like brutal/technical dm, but I don't like riffs that are brutal/technical just for the sake of being brutal/technical (modern Cali death, anyone?). As for fast or slow, it depends what mood I'm in. These bands write my favorite riffs: Mourning Beloveth, Arghoslent, Sacramentum, The Chasm, Amorphis (Karelian Isthums, I hate the new stuff), Nile, Suffocation, Dissection (not Reinkaos, though), Dawn, Demilich, and a few more. As you can see, these bands cover a variety of styles.

Add to that Destroyer 666, Slough Feg, Incantation and Pagan Altar, and you've got me covered too.

Preconceptions about riffs fucking suck. A riff needn't be complex, brutal or fast to be effective. See: The Eternal Glory of War.

Heavy complex riffs with the cool shredding solo. Probably one of the reasons Morbid Angel is my favorite DM band, Nile also has a similar style in guitar playing and they're one of my favorites too. Though music without solos can be very good, though some solos aren't appealing to me. Black metal riffs are cool too, I prefer the brutal/dark riffs similar in death and black metal, I've always had a hard time picking death over black or black over death but in terms of guitar I'll pick heavy complex riffs with solos.

I prefer quiet, atmospheric riffs that band such as Agalloch, Empryrium, Dornenreich, Sun of the Sleepless, Woods of Ypres, Wyrd (especially on Heathen), etc use.

However, I can also appreciate a damned good crushing doom metal riff, a fast brutal death metal riff, a crunchy power metal riff ala Grave Digger, and anything else in between.

I usually like extremely fast paced heavy stuff but Gorgoroth's A World to Win slays everyone and everything in the guitar department enven though it's relatively slow and not at all complex.
