Guitar picking

i got into clandestine but everything else i gotta be in a certain mood for. not saying i dont like em.

the first two full albums are just painfully superior to everything else.

wolverine Blues has some good tracks, but LHP and Clandestine have so much more enduring appeal. they are just so densely packed with ideas they're always interesting to listen to. about 90% of that is down to the drumming though!!

btw dan swano has this software he uses, (i think the same one tom schultz used with boston to ensure he always got the same sound!) and he modelled the clandestine guitar sound with it so he could steal it for one of the EoS albums. i think it may have been purgatory afterglow but don't quote me on that!!

i wonder if he used 9s?.....

i have to use 9s because i'm using a flloyd rose trem, and they just can't handle anything heavier. i make them hybrid with 46 bottoms and just about get away with it. i used 10s for years with it and just ran into so many problems.

You just need some tighter springs on the back of your trem to use heavier strings, if you get the guitar set up professionally they usually ask what guage strings and tuning you use and will replace springs if needed.

tried that unfortunately. it left the tension on the trem so tight that it became too stiff to use effectively. it also put too much pressure on the pegs, causing the blade which it pivots on to blunt very quickly. this means the bridge will 'stick' in two places, and you can tune the guitar perfectly, but as soon as you touch the trem it will snap back and forth between it's two fixed positions..

also i'm paranoid about it snapping through the wood at the pegs, which is what happened to my lovely RG550 :(

Yeah, the knife edges are the real problem I think. On my 7s, I use 10-46s with a 60 for the low B, and my knife edges hate me for it. :( I'm gonna start making my band tune down half a step I think, to ease a *little* pressure off the edges.

I can't stand 9s. :(

You can get the same trem tension with 9s with 12s. I dunno whos setting up your guitars but hes not doing a very good job. My trem feels idential on my 6 tunes to E as it does in B ...l both guitars are Ibanez 550s with the original edge, ones in B with 12s and the other in E with 9s .... and if there is a differnce its very very slight

dude, whatever floats your boat, no need to get personal here. i just expressed my very own opinion, and as far as i'm concerned we can agree to disagree on that one. i never really got into their studio albums, and when i saw them live i was bored as hell. and their guitar sound was crappy - definitely NOT because of the PA as it was a huge festival with a top notch pa.

trem tension?.. not if it's set up to "float" you can't... and anyway we were mostly on about string tension.. and there is no possibility that 9's at B will be the same tension as at E... no way.. that's just physics.

just got 12s tonight, am putting them on right now...and i sent my guitarist a link to this thread so you guys can teach him a thing or two

don't just whack on a heavier guage. you'll have to get the thing set up properly to use them. you'll need the truss rod tightening and possibly the height of your trem etc.

if you're going to change guage for the long term i would certainly recommend a full pro-setup.

while you're all on the subject... (temp. thread steal)

I use 12s in E so when I tune down it gets to slack for me. does anyone know where I can get thicker strings?

Ok let me rephrase... You can get the same FEEL on your trem with a set of 12s tuned to B, as you can get with a set of 9s tuned to E. If you set your trem up properly and difference in th feel will be minimal. The bar on my 550's feels almost identical on both guitars of my guitars.

One guitar is a RG 550 with an original edge using 3 springs in \|/ this pattern adjusted so it sits flush with the top of the body. When tuned to E.

The other guitar is a RG550 with an original edge using 4 springs in || || this pattern set to float the same way as the one tuned in E. This guitar uses 12s tuned to B.

The differnce in th feel of the trem on one vs. the other is negligable at best.

make more sense?

13s are the highest ive seen for guitar. Other than that i would guess bass stings mixed with guitar strings would be the only thing i could think of.

i don't give a shit, i just disagree violently :headbang:

well lovely.

Sinister Mephisto - if it's the lower strings that get too slack for you then GHS Zack Wylde Boomers come in 10 - 60 and 11 - 70 guages... nice and thick on the bottom!

also guitarguru - obviously you know this already but you're right.

i understood that from to the get.... my point is that we were all on about string tension, not trem bar tension.

one comment for the Hopkins Vs. Fragle pissing match :)P) : Festival sound, around the world and throughout the history of festivals, is notorious for sucking ass.
