afaik guitar rig is a vst that comes with a footswitch, so it's more than just software. good stuff too.

IMHO There is no software that can give you this type of sound yet.

Guitar Rig?
It sucks, man. Not bad for clean sounds, but distorted sounds are terrible - lifeless & muddy.

Good budget solution for home recording is a hardware OD/Dist pedal, like Tube Screamer or Boss DS-1 with VST ampsim, like Steinberg Warp or free Voxengo Boogex (with custom impulses posted on this forum) really rocks.

Great for clean sounds, i think the guitarist for machine head (not sure) uses it live for clean tone. The distortion sounds are wretched, but the lead tones aren't bad. The whole program is covered in loads of nasty hissing an noise though.
