The novelty will soon wear off
scratches/dings add to the personality that's why I love them
Guitars need some battle scars.
While I agree with the sentiment, five minutes after unboxing my Telecaster I proceeded to drop the pair of scissors I had used to open the box straight down across the surface causing a 1 inch scratch in it's beautiful vintage blonde finish - add to that the fact that it is a pine body (very soft wood) and the scratch went deep... Needless to say I shouted obscenities for a few minutes and then tried buffing it out a bit. While it does not look as bad as it did, I finally applied a little clear coat over it so it would not spread and all has been well since.
This reminds me of the time when my drummer was twirling his keys while I was polishing my week-old PRS Custom 22 10-top after a rehearsal. They flew off his finger and left a nice gouge right above the bridge. Needless to say, I feel your pain.

Which is a shame because I was really looking forward to it.
Unless it's an old Strat, you're gonna struggle Owen. Fender finishes are pretty much hard plastic. You're gonna have to fuck that shit up real good to get any sort of damage out of it.
