You are ordered, on pain of death, to make a CD featuring the greatest guitar solos ever. It must contain 10 songs and can not have more than one song from the same band. List the songs and artists.

Intro to wasted years.
That "Still of the Night" hairs standinfg on the back of my head.

I'll get back to you

Extreme - Play with Me
Guns N Roses - November Rain
Led Zeppelin - Since I've Been Loving You
Dire Straits - Sultans of Swing

...that's all I can think of right now. The top 2 are by far the best solos ever though.

Eagles - "Hotel California"
Guns N Roses - "Sweet Child O Mine"
Pink Floyd - "Comfortably Numb"
Dire Straits - "Telegraph Road"
Pantera - "Floods"
Deep Purple - "Smoke on the Water"
Led Zeppelin - "Stairway to Heaven"
Iron Maiden - "Caught Somewhere in Time"
Cold Chisel - "Bow River"
Blue Oyster Cult - "(Don't Fear) The Reaper"

:)

OK. These will probably change within the hour, but what the hey. No particular order.

Iron Maiden, "Stranger in a Strange Land"
Guns N Roses, "Sweet Child O' Mine"
Doctor Butcher, "The Chair"
Metallica, "The Unforgiven"
Lynyrd Skynyrd, "Free Bird"
Ozzy Osbourne, "Crazy Train"
Styx, "Snowblind"
Nirvana, "Smells Like Teen Spirit"
The Beatles, "While My Guitar Gently Weeps"
Dream Theater, "Scarred"

Spiff. You HAVE to check out the Paul Gilbert solo on While My Guitar Gently Weeps on the Yellow Matter Custard CD/DVD.

I have the DVD and as much as I love Portnoy and Neal Morse, Paul Gilberts solo on that song absolutely STEALS the show. It is fucking phenomenal. Just awesome.

The whole gig is really great actually. They sing about 30 Beatle songs. The harmonies are spot on and they play some obscure and lesser known tracks which is cool. Infact, they probably only play a handful of songs from the #1 album. The only ones I can think of are Magical Mystery Tour, While my Guitar gently Weeps, A Day in the Life, Nowhere Man, Revolution, Come Together, I am the Walrus...... and ticket to ride

The rest is filled with songs like:
Free as a Bird
The Night Before
Dear Prudence
Oh Darling
Everybodys got something to hide except me and my monkey
No Reply
Sgt Pepper Reprise
Lovely Rita
Good Morning
You're gunna lose that girl

etc
Get it from Portnoys website. Well worth it

:headbang:
Great song

Yeah... George Harrison didn't really have the chops that Clapton had in those days. But Gilberts version kicks ass. As Portnoy says after the song:

"The Absolutely fucking Amazing Mr Paul Gilbert. Thats not the way Clapton played it. He was slow hands, you're fast hands"

As for a CD of Guitar solos......

Dream Theater - Octavarium.
The solo at the end of the song is so fuckin spine tingly with the orchestra over the top. Not that flashy a solo by JP's standards, but gets me every time

Deep Purple - Hold On
Was a toss up between this and Highway Star, but on an album where Blackmore seemed a bit disinterested (Stormbringer), Hold on is one of his best ever solos.

Pink Floyd - Comforrtably Numb
No explanation needed. Gilmour :headbang:

Pain of Salvation - People Passing By
Another solo that just gets to me everytime I hear it. I always sing along to it and its brilliant.

James LaBrie - Slightly out of Reach
Off his latest album Elements of Persuasion. Seriously, the solo in this song has to be heard to be believed. Pretty young guitar player apparently, but this solo is fuckin incredible. A definate highlight of Jame's solo career.

Yes - And You and I
Love Steve howes tone in this one

Bruce Dickinson - Tears of the Dragon
Great solo. Not the best of all time, but I'd chuck it on my cd cause I love the song as well

Dire Straits - Brothers in Arms
Knoffler played some pretty damn good emotional leads. This and Telegraph Road are up there.

Dream Theater - The Spirit Carries on/Anna Lee/A Change of Seasons/Scarred/Voices/Lie/Under a Glass Moon/Another Day/Trial of Tears/Lines in the Sand/Goodnight Kiss
What can I say, I'm a Petrucci fan.

Deep Purple - Sometimes I feel like screaming.
Cause I had to have a Steve Morse song in there and this is prob his best with DP. Didn't wanna put a solo from an instrumental song in there.

Yes, I was aware it was Clapton. :)

I'll be changing my list soon. Somehow I forgot "Alive" by Pearl Jam. Probably better than half those on my list.
