This list is totally random ... Vai and Azagtoth in the 50's ?!?!?! ... and Scott Ian and Morello in the 30's ?!?!?!

Nick Bowcott #100 ... ok I agree with this :)

Before I tear this list to shreds, what's it based on? Ability to play or song writing? Who voted - readers or writers?

And either way, how are Tom Morello, Korn, and CC Deville higher than Joe Satch or Steve Vai (or indeed the rest of that entire list)?

Hmm. It's not a bad list, and 4 of my top 5 are in the list (Fripp, Azagthoth, Cantrell, and Steer), but Guitar World still sucks ass. :D

What I find strange is that Robert Fripp is on the list, but not in the top 10. What I mean by that is that the man is a god, and the 74 guitarists above him couldn't outplay him to save their life. Trust me. :loco:

It's ridiculous. Tony Iommi only wishes he was Jimi Hendrix or Jimmy Page (as a guitar virtuoso, NOT song writer).

However, if you look at this list and read it in order of 'importance / influence' on the heavy metal genre, then it begins to look significantly more accurate. In that regard, however, I would still put the Slayer and Maiden boys higher than Pantera and Tool.

You have to argue that Tony Iommi invented heavy metal guitar. So I agree with number 1.

I quit reading Guitar World a long time ago. They started to concentrate on popular bands, not good guitarists.

26. Head & Munky (KORN)
30. Daron Malakian (SYSTEM OF A DOWN)
70. Bjorn Gelotte & Jesper Stromblad (IN FLAMES)
96. Alexi Laiho (CHILDREN OF BODOM)

:puke: :err:  :zombie:

86. Abbath Doom Occulta (IMMORTAL)
hahaha, I like this one. But I always thought Demonaz was the better guitarist.

92. Bill Steer (CARCASS)
92? Steer was Carcass. Both the man and the band were/are better than Amott/Arch Enemy.

Stupid magazines.....

Absolutely - unfortunately that doesn't explain how they came up with #2-#100. It's an interesting list, I'd just like to see what basis they used to position each player(s).

Also, where's Megadeth? If Kirk Hammet is at #2...you know the rest.

EDIT: oops, I just noticed Megadeth at #19. Glad that Friedman was included too.

I can't understand how Dimebag Darrell outranks Jimi Hendrix. That alone makes the list mindboggling...

I also can't understand why Jimi Hendrix is there. In all fairness, he wasn't metal. He sang about peace, that's not metal. It's about war, destruction, and killing stuff.

I was once told that the term "heavy metal" was coined from Hendrix' playing, one critic said his guitar sounded like heavy, falling chunks of metal.

Granted, I'm sure that story is utter shite, but maybe the idiots over at Guitar World heard the same one. :)

Yeah, I reckon that's bullshit. Both in how the term was derived and certainly in the description of his music.

I thought it was pretty common knowledge that the term "heavy metal" came from the Steppenwolf lyrics in "Born to be Wild" ?
