just want to have an idea of how many people agree with me, not really care about the one's who doesn't.

Hansen is the main figure(the father):notworthy  :kickass:

I've been saying for years that as far as the "power metal" genre stands today in it's present form, Kai Hansen is the "father". Sure Helloween was influenced by Maiden and Accept and those bands before by Sabbath and Queen, back to the stone age with people beating on rocks with sticks :p
But it seems 9 out of 10 power metal bands today will claim the Original "Keeper's" albums are the statos quo for power metal.

For European power metal, certainly Kai has always been the biggest and most influental.

Regarding American power metal in the vein of Iced Earth, Nevermore, and Jag Panzer, Kai has had little if any influence (which will likely lead some to not label these bands power metal but just simply heavy metal).

For me, the term heavy metal encompases all metal "sub-genres". The term heavy metal came to be when a reviewer of Black Sabbath's debut album said the music sounded so horrific that it reminded him of big slabs of heavy METAL being slammed against each other. That's a documented fact. That was back in the late 1960s and the term, "heavy metal" has existed ever since. Kai, Petrucci, Schaffer, Harris, etc., weren't making music at that time, but were listening to it as youngsters. Many others weren't even born yet.

Since then, the tree that started it all grew new branches that moved in new directions, but have never been totally detached from the base (e.g. prog, death, speed, black, power, technical, symphonic etc.,)

Just my opinion.

I totally agree about Kai.....but dont forget who influenced Kai......the Mighty SCANNER!!!! I remember reading an old metal zine and he was really heavily influenced by Scanners first disc "Hypertrace". Listen to that disc again...you could easily think it was a Gammy Ray disc. I think he is one of the few who knows how to write great power metal songs and also not be ashamed to call his band a power metal band.

sweet! Axel Julius is the most important figure in power metal, that no one has ever heard of!

Since labels are the rage (against order), I'll deem both Iron Maiden and Dio as proto-power metal. One of the biggest debts in the genre goes to Yngwie Malmsteen. I'm not a huge fan of his, but his early stuff with Joe Lynn Turner sounds about like what some bands are turning out today

.

Nevermore is power metal...really? I would argue Thrash-Prog.
