Hansen the most important figure in the power metal world

I'm going to have to disagree and go with Zod here. While maybe not power metal themselves (argueable), bands like Iron Maiden and Dio certainly have had the most influence on the genre, Maiden especially. I think every power metal band I've heard takes something out of Maiden's book. Without Maiden there is no power metal, period.

You could use this argument to say "Without Elvis there would be no rock and roll, so Elvis is Progressive Death Metal". There's a big difference between being an influence on a genre, and being part of one, and in my opinion the music Maiden and Dio play is just plain old heavy metal, although they have been the influence for a lot of power metal bands, their sound is distinct from that.

Well for starters, I probably would consider Maiden and Dio power metal or at least pre-cursors to it. Secondly, your arguement makes sense except that Maiden and Dio have DIRECT influences on the sound of power metal. It's not nearly the distant relationship like Elvis that you compare it to. You probably can't find too much in common between the sounds of Elvis and progressive death metal. However, I feel that Maiden and Dio pretty much molded the sound that has become power metal. Also, it probably doesn't help that I do not personally enjoy any band that Kai Hansen has ever been a part of. I'll stick with Maiden- where it all really started

The brothers Hanson have gone power metal? Right on, I knew it was only a matter of time.

MMM-RAWK,
Jeff

lol.... Actually they were into metal (not power metal),or at least hard rock, as kids.....err, when they were younger than when they were 'big' and toured. :D Kids' size Leather jackets, the whole works.

My old roommate's friends who worked local crew at the Hanson show at Lakewood Amphitheater here compared it -- in awe -- to a Beatles show audience-wise, and were duly surprised at the trio's onstage abilities. :OMG:

Oh, wait, you were referring to Kai HansEn? --Nevermind! :)

Yep...power metal got it's beginnings & then some with Maiden. They laid the foundation and have continued schooling. Have their recent releases been as prominant as their earlier stuff? No...but neither has Gamma Ray's.
With that being said...Eddie is the "father" of power metal.

Well, I have to agree the importance of Iron Maiden in the roots of the "genre". Their guitar lines, harmonies, are definately an influence in power metal bands. As far as singing goes, I'll have to say there's a huge influence courtesy of Rob Halford (Judas Priest). Those high and lows, are a trademark to most power metal acts. In terms of drumming, Iron Maiden again, with some elements of thrash in it (that double bass drum).
What about bass? I don't think Steve Harris was too influential on the genre, at least playing wise. Most of the bassists in the genre follow their guitarists like if it was a low tone 3rd guitar (reminding me of most of the 80's hair metal acts).
So I guess I have to agree with the Iron Maiden, Judas Priest influenced genre.

I totally agree about Kai.....but dont forget who influenced Kai......the Mighty SCANNER!!!! I remember reading an old metal zine and he was really heavily influenced by Scanners first disc "Hypertrace". Listen to that disc again...you could easily think it was a Gammy Ray disc. I think he is one of the few who knows how to write great power metal songs and also not be ashamed to call his band a power metal band.

Yes, Hypertrace was/is a great album. You can definitely see the influence there.
