Yeah, spiders that big are reasonably common... At least they were when I was living in Tasmania. Haven't seen any since I've been in Canberra.

I'm doing this thread today 'cos I'm going down to the lake early in the morning to claim a good spot for punching down beers and being a rowdy good-for-nothing.

Happy Australia Day, you lot!!!

And yes, the spiders really are that big here. I nearly screamed like a little girl the first time I saw one. I thought "NO *censor* WAY?!?!?!". The spider in that health-bar pic is called a Huntsman. They're 95% harmless, UNLESS, you absolutely give them no choice because you're being a dickhead and have cornered it. Even then, a male is STILL likely to run away or at least TRY. A female (if around her eggs) will rear up and take a battle-stance, but their bite is harmless. Big spiders are generally non-toxic. Its the tiny ones that you dont take notice of that can kill you.
Coopers Best Extra Stout, here I come!!! WOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

Pretty much all the spiders I see in Melbourne are fucking tiny cunts

Then you're lucky and should never move closer to Skeleton Creek. We've always lived relatively close to it and we get some decent ones.
I would literally shit bricks if I saw ones as big as all those pictures though. That, or put a hole in the wall making sure the cunt was dead.

Oh yeah, enjoy the day off tomorrow guys!

wow, the "big" ones we have here in austria are not even half as big as those buddies^^ jesus...
we once had some kind of accident were we had a lot of semi-toxic spiders (at least 4 the kids) during one summer/fall, but i was too young to remember what spider it was...i only know they were real tiny,
and that it sucked, because the only thing you could do to avoid those bastards was to stay away from any green place^^
and yeah, at that time i lived on the coutryside next to a forrest.
damn.

Man, you guys should be able to have concealed carry permits for self defense against those monsters, jesus :yow:

And Morgan, your new avatar is kinda bringin' the creepz (mainly because even though I can tell her eyes are closed, at first glance to me it looks like they're open and just really freakin' weird and otherworldly/undead  )

Like lilhermiejobo said, those big ones like on the motivator poster and stuff are practically harmless. Most people see them around the house and then don't bother them because they kill a lot of the shit that does annoy you around the household. Either that or they just put them outside or something.

The types of spiders you have to worry about are the ones Nic posted a picture of - they kill you pretty quick, but you don't see them as often as you'd think. People from overseas tend to think Australia is literally crawling with dangerous stuff, and it is to a certain extent, but you really have to go out of your way to put yourself in danger. My brother has a girlfriend who is german, but studying in New Zealand, and she came over here for a holiday with him and they went bushwalking, and she was shitting herself like "SHOULD YOU BE WALKING AROUND THE BUSH LIKE THIS? ARE THERE SNAKES AND SPIDERS AND VENOMOUS THINGS EVERYWHERE?" and my brother was just like "umm, there are walking tracks here for a reason...if you see a snake, don't move, if you see a spider, step on it with your shoe?"
