Aside from the classic thrash bands and new thrash bands copying said classic thrash bands, has California burned out its own metal scene? Now that metalcore is overexposed and taking a serious backlash, I'm not seeing a big resurgence in their metal scene anymore. Anyone have anything to the contrary? Is there anything left worth listening to?

I live in southern California, and the scene is fairly strong I guess, but you're right in saying there aren't many new bands that really stick out. At least not around here...

And what's with no bands coming around here anymore? There hasn't been a good show down here for ever...

Yeah that's kinda my point, as California was once the focal point for just about every type of metal on earth: thrash, death, glam, industrial, etc.

I still prefer American Thrash to just about any thrash in the world. In my opinion, Municipal Waste is the savior of thrash, and they're not even from NY or San Fran! They've got it all: the funny, tongue-in-cheek song titles, the shout vocals, and the awesome and headbanging riffage. I sometimes forget it's them and I have to make sure it's not DRI I'm listening to.

American thrash >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> European thrash

I lost interest in the Northern California metal scene a while ago. Whether it was a lack of creativity, lack of places to play (RIP POUND SF), or just getting older and burned out, the scene that my band, Down Factor, was involved in, just started to wither.

Big bands still tour out here and make a killing, so I really wonder myself what has caused the local bands to stop trying to hard.

That said, the thrash and death bands are slowly being replaced by the new wave of metal, ie. Weakling-inspired and one man black metal, and HoF style HEAVY metal. Bands like Elk, Horn of Dagoth, Leviathan (favorite!!!), Asunder.... none of them great--yet. Isabel probably knows more about the thrash scene these days.

The scene isn't dead. But it is time to rise again.
Anyone want to start a band?

the real question is...

Has the wagon fallen off California?

I agree that one of the major problems is lack of places to play, there are no real huge all ages metal venues that really are friendly to the local bands, slims mostly just does big bands. also it seems from what i've seen that not that many people come out, its hard to get together a show and have it actually have a large turnout, even when the biggest local bands play its always the same people in the scene and the regular bay area metalheads that go to the big shows don't seem to come out to the little shows. when i say that i don't mean that some don't, but i always see the same faces and while thats cool, it would be nice to see some new people coming to all different types of shows, i'm pretty guilty of that too though since i don't usually come out to local shows since i don't have a car and i'm pretty fucking lazy.

I have slowley stepped away from playing guitar, i have lost all motivation. But i'm thinking about getting into some serious singing/vocal training.

and nipples lol

you sound like me. I really don't play guitar nearly as much anymore. pretty much since i moved to Arizona basically. (working nights hasn't helped either) But I do like the idea of doing some singing stuff to replace it.

and my favorite nipples are lying on the bed behind me
