I'm looking to pick one up for my band for backing tracks (keys, click and multi layered vox), that or an MX-2424 with the remote transport so the the drummer can control the tracks from his kit.

i use two mackie mdr 24/96, pretty much the same as the alesis hd24....if you're using with a 24 track board and some outboard gear then you'll have a great system.....no computer hassles, no latency issues.
I've got one, awesome bit of kit!
I use mine for recording drum tracks when doing demo's for bands (i dont have a laptop and cant be fucked karting around my desktop pc!) and then import the tracks to pro tools later to record guitar/bass/vox
great for recording live gigs also as previously mentioned.
very stable and no latency issues, shame they're so pricey though, mind you I got mine for £550 2nd hand with 2 hard drives, and picked up the firewire thing for it a week later for only £80
