help a guitar player with right hand muting

hi, ive been trying out fingerstyle lately but find i have trouble keeping things quiet while playing ascending scale passages. to much ring or noise for my taste as my fret hand moves from a lower string to a higher one. is alternating fingers using a "rest stroke" technique the key to my problem or will that affect speed?
