Guys,

After a severe unexpected computer crash, I can't open the file I've been working on anymore... Cubase tells me "Invalid Project File"... :ill: Anybody knows if there is a solution to this other than just start all over again ?

Thanks...

Brett

P.S. : Please, no "You should have made regular back ups" etc... :Smug:

One thing you could try is copy the .cpr file, rename it and try to open that new file.

Have you installed a new plugin recently, or have you used a plugin in this project that you normally don't? The problem could also be there, Cubase not being able to load that plugin.

I should not be joking about this as it is a lot of work that is wasted, but if you were using a mac, nothing of this would have happened. :D Or were you using a mac?

Ei Brett  , peace :headbang:

No, I didn't install anything suspicious recently, the computer just turned to Blue without any warning (I don't really know why, maybe because of the intensive CPU usage and the air heat, it's very hot today, like 37° or so), and when I turned it on, no way to open the file again... :(

Oh shit, I also had this problem once. It was just invaliv. I think that was because I saved on an external hard disk and disconnected it too fast.
I couldn't solve the problem and had to redo all the work :erk:
Would be cool if someone knew how recover it.

This is the best info I could find out of three pages of a Google search.

Never happened to me in 5 years of using Cubase, but that's freakin' scary if it's true. I wonder if it's only specific to SX3?

Of course the RAM hungry projects are the one's you've spent the most time on and are probably almost done with.

Fucking balls. Sorry, Brett.

Maybe this is the sign for me to finally switch to Sawstudio...

gnagnagna :)

Thanks for the search Sugar, I've read this also... This is really terrible... First time it happens to me, and I hope it's the last time (unless, as being said in the thread, even older copies of the file can't be opened at all).

Haha. Yeah, I'm kinda getting to the point where a realtime mixdown would be faster than an export. WTF?

I had a problem last summer where my computer would just randomly turn off when trying to render a full chain of plugins for mastering in Wavlab.

After installing a new motherboard, processor, RAM, extra case fans, re-installing Windows, and cursing a lot, I noticed that I had a much better success ratio when I left it off for a while and let things cool down.

Some hints:

1. Uninstall and re-instal your Cubase.
2. Try installing an different version of Cubase (different build)
3. Install the latest Nuendo and open the file (Nuendo opens Cubase files) and finish it using Nuendo.

Hope it helps.

I do a lot more with plugs than I used to so likewise it's getting extreme, I dread to think what mixing our new album down will be like now.

The songs are like 20 minutes long :erk::ill:o_O

20 minute songs!? You're in for a treat.

And it's even worse if you do your own mastering...

You start mixing into your mastering settings because you can, of course. Want the snare louder? Remix! That's a 5 minute export. Didn't like the change? Whoops, you overwrote the old mixdown. Another 5 minute export. Render the master: 3 minutes. Then burn a CD (2 minutes) and listen to it in the car. Shit, should have left the snare louder. Hopefully you saved that other mixdown! Re-render the master plugs and burn another CD, another 5 minutes.

So now one "little" decision on one song just cost you 20-30 minutes of staring blankly at progress bars -- and I'm talking about more "standard" length songs. At least you can noodle on the guitar and dream about upgrading your computer while you wait.

My band's album is composed of one song of 1h10 minutes (and many, way too many tracks)... I gave up mixing it until I get a serious computer (Dual G5 with shitload of memory + UAD-1s + Powercore), it's just impossible to do with a regular computer... :erk:

Wow, that blows.

It's funny how everyone says "I should've just stayed with SX 2.2!!!" around there.

Well, I did find a Mac that I could afford...

This year, a portable air conditioner and a newer version of Wavlab seem to be doing the trick. No A/C living in SoCal last summer... Ugh.
