Help , Mac hard drive issue

I have been using an 2010 imac i7 1TB 8gig RAM since last summer . A few months ago I bought Komplete 7 and installed all the samples on the internal drive . Ever since I have been having performance issues HD spikes etc infact if I load up a few kontakt instruments record a bit of audio the machine is struggling to play back . I was about to install Komplete 8 update but thought it better to resolve this issue first . So hopefully buying an external hard drive for my samples will solve the problems ? I was hoping someone who has a clue could help suggest a hard drive for this job , ssd or not etc

That's a good idea.. I keep all my samples on an external Firewire drive and it works so much smoother than when I had everything on the internal drive. So yeah it will definitely help!

Good to know , I thought my hard drive was dying on me ! Now if only the mac had more than one fire wire port .....

I was curious about this as well. I have an EastWest pack that I wanted to install to an external drive but it would only let me install to the system drive. How do you go around this?
