Well, for metal noobs, melodeath (In Flames, At The Gates, Soilwork, Dark Tranquility, Arch Enemy, etc.) would be the best place to start, and also, this so called "extreme power metal" (some don't consider this a real genre, but, stuff like Children of Bodom, Kalmah, Wintersun, Norther, etc.)
