I've read through this forum forever and can't grasp what's going on.

I use Pod Farm to jam, and no matter what, no matter how hard I try, I just can't get a good tone. I see all you guys talking IR response and IR cab or something, and I just don't get it.

You guys have awesome tones and I just wanna know how to get them.

Can anyone help me with all this?

had the same problem a few years ago. I changed the cheap PUs of my guitar and the sound with podfarm was good ... well ... as good as podfarm can be :D maybe you have bad pus too?

Impulses dont work very well with podfarm. Why dont you try other ampsims? Like x50?

Really? Please explain.
I bought recabinet and use it with podfarm quite a bit. In most cases I prefer the recabinet to the podfarm cabs.

When I tried, it sounded quite bad. I remember comparing 8505 and other amp from podfarm with the same impulse and difference was night and day and yes I turned off the cab sim from podfarm.

Well, if recabinet works, that´s good for you.

Wow, 5 years. "read through this forum forever"

Let me clarify;

I signed up in 08 to look for tips on building a hobby studio and tone tips, after numerous smart ass or elitist responses, I just left and didn't come back.

I figured I'd give it another shot.

I said 'forever' because I spent 5 hours yesterday combing through reading anything I could on tone design.

That clear it up?

Yes, that clears things up. ;)

You gotta understand from our (or my) perspective you made it sound like you're either a: one lazy mofo or b: have a serious reading comprehension problem.

But yeah, that clears things up.

Good luck, looks like He's Dead, Jim hooked you up.

Trust me, I'm not trying to be a dick or lazy. This forum wasn't a warm and inviting place a few years ago

Basically, what I'm saying is, I see a lot of guys talking about IR response, and impulses, and stuff like that, and I just wanna know what all that means. Would it make my tones sound better?

As for now, I just want good guitars tones, and eventually to start writing and recording again one day.

I just want someone to explain how to make POD Farm sound better!

I mean, unless you're not computer literate at all, there are numerous threads on what impulse responses are, what amp simulations to use, which ones are free, where to get them, how to dial in a tone, etc.

Here's a custom intra-forum Google search function: https://www.google.com/cse/home?cx=007593470310830667409:4qw46y8lnza
Literally just google "how to make metal tone POD Farm" and you'll get hundreds of hits, both here and on normal Google.

To the contrary re: your previous post, I've found that people here are, to a bewildering degree, willing to answer the same 5 questions about guitar tones, how to use impulses, etc. over and over and over again with no real rudeness whatsoever, and each time somebody says something new and interesting. I knew absolutely nothing about any of this when I registered here, and I've just learned through osmosis how to make mixes that don't sound like complete turds. The first thing I learned was what to do with my guitars, by reading old threads.

You're not going to sound like Will Putney after 5 hours of research, but you should also get the answers you're looking for if you use the forum search function and Google, and then look on YouTube for whatever knowledge gaps you may have. If, at that point, you've spent hours looking and still don't understand, then that's when I post a thread here, or if it's something specific enough that it probably hasn't been answered before. But this thread is kind of like writing a letter to the editor in Better Homes and Gardens asking, "HELP ME HOW DO I ACHIEVE BETTER HOMES AND GARDENS," so that's why some of the responses are kind of snippy.

An Impulse response is sort of like a picture of a speaker cab and microphone placement except in audio terms rather than visual. I say picture rather than a video because it is static and lacks any dynamics a speaker give you in real life.

In a simple recording signal chain from guitar to what you hear in your ears you have guitar > amp > cab > microphone. An impulse response is basically taking a snapshot of the microphone and cabinet and creating an EQ curve that captures the exact characteristics of the cabinet and microphone in that instance of time. Essentially acting as a filter. So it gets rid of the need for a real cab or microphone. You then end up with a signal chain of guitar > amp > Impulse response.

There are thousands of impulses out there so its up to you to go and look for the ones you want but a good starting point is to look for Guitar hack's, catharsis' and sperimental impulses. All great impulses.

You will then need a impulse loader. It's basically a simple plugin you load up in your DAW that can read these impulse responses and use them correctly.

There are a few free ones out there. I personally use NadIR but a lot of people like to use Lepou's Lecab. There is also KeFIR and if you use Reaper you can also use ReaVerb.

You say you use Pod Farm so to use impulses first load up your DAW. Then load up Pod Farm on a track and turn off the cabinet simulation inside it. Then, on the same track load up one of the impulse loaders I just told you about. Then inside the impulse loader find where you have saved the impulse responses I also told you about.

That's not much more to it other than spending hours messing around with your guitar tones until it sends you insane.

Hope that helps.

I'm gonna give you some starter stuff. There's plenty more out there but this should get you going.

TSE X50(5150 emulation) and TSE808(TubeScreamer emulation)

NADIR(Impulse Loader):

Load the plugins in this order: TSE808->TSE X50->NADIR

Set TSE808 to 0 gain, half volume and adjust the tone to taste. Do whatever the fuck you want with X50 and load an impulse or two into NADIR.

Hawkevil + FarBy0ndMetal,

Thank you! You two have been super helpful. The only question I have is, Do I have to load these in a DAW, or can I do this as stand alone like POD Farm is? If I NEED a DAW, can you suggest one?
