Well, North Carolina's gay marriage banned passed today as an amendment to their state constitution defining marriage as between a man and a woman. Funny thing is, the last amendment to their constitution was to overturn a ban on interracial marriage.
You can still legally marry your first cousin though!

This; there is legal precedence in NC and in other states (Goodridge v. Dept of Health in MA) to suggest that this will be overturned on a state level - if it doesn't, I can almost guarantee it will be overturned by SCOTUS. It's one thing to prohibit same-sex marriage, it's another entirely to prohibit same-sex civil unions/domestic partnerships, and one county has already begun the process of restricting health insurance of their employee's same-sex significant other.

It's a big downer around here. If you look at the maps there is a direct correlation to demographics. All of the populous, educated and growing areas voted "no." All of the backwoods churches voted "yes."

Yeah you don't need a church to get married. You do need to get married to have specific rights available only to married couples though. My solution: The federal and state government ONLY recognize civil unions not performed in a church. Any two consenting adult persons can perform a union and all be granted the same rights.
Then if you want to have some ceremony in front of whatever made up god you worship, you're free to do so. Problem solved. The government stays out of marriage and your church doesn't have to feel like gay people are ruining.... whatever it is you feel they're ruining.

What I don't understand about the religious claim to marriage is that by tradition it was a business transaction of chattel property, and had absolutely nothing to do with love or affection. Once again, they've hijacked something and totally fucked it up.
