I can't see how anyone would be against middle class Americans having jobs.

I read a fucked-up article in a libertarian journal while back that claimed the notion of a middle class being a good thing was faulty and misleading because it hindered mobility between social classes. One of the funniest things I've ever read.

fuck social security anyways, i'd rather take the money i pay into that and invest into my own retirement in any manner i see fit

This argument gained a ton of support during Bush's term and the support largely disappeared when the stock market dropped 70%. You can't live very well off of SS anyway so if you don't save at all you are in trouble regardless. The problem with all "master of your own destiny" and most anti-social program options is that you have to be willing to let people suffer and die for that system to actually exist.
