hey trapped, what are some Technical metal bands similar to Spiral Architect?

What you want is technical prog.

Try the first two Psychotic Waltz releases, and in particular, the songs 'And the devil cried' and 'successor'.

Atheist, Cynic, Death, etc. are all technical Death-Metal... that is possibly why you don't appreciate cynic and atheist so much... but just for arguaments sake, check out the Atheist songs:

Elements
Mineral
Brains

And have a listen to the CYNIC demo's from 1991 at Cynical Sphere, just scroll down to the bottom of the page and download the songs 'Uroboric Forms' and 'Eagle nature'. The demos are MUCH better than the cd version.

Hope that helps. If you like Spiral Architect, you should like Psychotic Waltz's early stuff, especially the songs i mentioned.

Early Psychotic Waltz is kindof like Nevermore's Politics of Ecstasy...

the songs 'A psychotic waltz' reminds me of a darker 'passenger' when it gets heavy and twisted...

Glad you brought this up.

Ill check out some of those bands. I already have spastic ink, watchtower and spiral architect so ill get busy.

:Smokedev: Did you try Cacophony? It isn't Death/Atheist style but it had very technical guitar parts, played by Marty Friedman and Jason Becker!!

James Murphy it's fucking cool too! Watchtower, Spastic Ink, Liquid tension Experiment, Sadus, Control Denied, all of this bands had the coolest musicians in metal universe! :Smokedev:

Spastic Ink

Download in this order:
Just A Little Dirty
Mad Data Race
To Counter In Groove In E Minor
That 178 Thing
Harm and Half-time Baking Shuffle

That should get you into them so much you'll be pissed that you can't find their CD. They will be reprinting some more when the new CD is done, though, so hopefully that'll be soon.

I heard Spastic Inc(sp?) is like them too, although i could be mistaken.

either way, does anyone know any good Spastic Inc songs i could download?

If you are lucky enough to find then (audio galaxy have them), here is a list of songs to try. All of them are good and are twisted as fuck containing some great drumming so here is a list of them all off the album ink complete:

The Mad Data Race
A Morning With Squeakie
Just A Little Dirty
See, And It's Sharp
Suspended On All Fours
A Wild Hare
Harm And Half-Time Baking Shuffle
To Counter and Groove in E minor
That 178 Thing
Eigths Is Enough
Mosquito Brain Surgery.

Take your pick :). This album has ran out of copies so its pretty hard to get it.

it's important to recognize that there IS NO OTHER ROCK MUSIC with the combination of technicality + focus + lyrical intellect that Spiral Architect's music encompasses. there probably won't be for a while, either.

for other, excellent, though less awe-inspiring technical rock/metal....check out

Cynic
Spastic Ink
Zero Hour
Watchtower (singer makes me cringe, though)
Aghora (only semi-tech...but it's got the 2 Seans. can't go wrong.)
Gordian Knot
Death
Martyr
Theory in Practice
Sieges Even

Spiral Architect are just a continuation on from where Watchtower left off... they are not the most original band out there....

But they are great, i really like them... But this is not the place for Ass Kissing... okay

...And by the way, Martyr are much much better than spiral architect. In fact, Martyr kicks ALL of your asses...!! TWICE!!

Depends which watchtower album you've heard. I still havent managed to hear energetic assembly which contains a better vocalist apparently.

Does anyone know where i can download it?

I have checked out psychotic waltz and its very good. I still need to get some more songs before i can make my mind up but its looking good :)

There is a chance that You MIGHT'VE heard the vocalist from Energetic Dissasembly before, since it's Jason McMaster, who went on to create the LA Sleazy Hair band Dangerous Toys (remember "Teas'n Pleas'n" or "Scared")

Actually Jason and Watchtower have just completed their THIRD album "Mathematics" and are awaiting the proper channel to launch the disc

You might want to check out old 'coroner'... like Punishment for Decadence, No more color... etc.

Check out the song 'Semtex revolution' if you are interested...

yeah......cause i can really kiss the ass of a band that never reads this forum.

Spiral Architect are more technical than Watchtower. they have much more harmony. WT seemed to eschew harmony in favor of rhythmic complexity, whereas SA incorporate a lot of harmonic elements from jazz. i find SA's singer to be much more integral to the overall presentation of SA than Watchtower's singers were to WT. Oyvind's penchant for odd notes + frequent harmonizing means that he's generally singing what is in fact a necessary component of the structure of the piece.
