What's up, Scott Ian is definitely one of my favorite guitarists of all time, but the best rythm guitarist of all time, IMO, is Eric Peterson
of TestAmenT, to me, rythm playing is all about the palm mute technique, that and pick control, Palm muting doesn't sound like anything very important or impressive, but believe me if you can master some crazy pm moves it makes all the difference in the world, the guitarist that just quit the band I am in just couldn't do the shit I was, it was all palm muting and....if you are a guitar player you know what i mean, he just sounded sloppy compared to me, it made for sloppy sounding shows, and sloppy sounding demos, it's pretty funny, we used to have three damn guitarist and no bass player, now it is just me, our bass player, vocalist and drummer( the best I have ever seen, and I have seen a lot of drummers) and we sound heavier than ever.
BTW I would have said I was the best rythm player ever, but I got relegated to playing lead, and playing three guitarists solos and three guitarists parts, shit yeah
