Good thread since I hate Hit Parader. They don't do it now that the mainstream is sitting up and taking notice of Swedish metal, but a couple of years ago they would frequently crap on bands just for being from Northern Europe. I remember their "review" for Soilwork's "A Predtor's Portrait" said "we wouldn't force this on our worst enemies." Another review took a patronizing tone towards Sentenced for being from Finland ("Yes, you may be surprised that there are _any_ bands from Finland..."). This was at the same time they were writing praise about Limp Bizkit and every third rate nu-metal act that dragged their baggy britches down the path. Anyway, now that I have got that off my chest, I'll contribute to what Glenn had in mind in the first place...
01. Robert Plant - Great rock and roll voice. I might catch flack for saying this, but Zeppellin's place in metal history is exagerrated.
02. Rob Halford - from an objective POV, probably the best metal vocalist of all time
03. Steven Tyler - see comment beside Plant. I cannot understand how anyone would consider Aerosmith a metal act.
04. Chris Cornell - great vocalist and a great waste of talent in Audioslave
05. Bon Scott - The best crappy vocalist ever. I can't improve upon Da Harvester's comment.
06. Freddie Mercury - #1 of all-time, all genres. PERIOD. Again, my thoughts exactly. This guy's voice was a miracle.
07. Bruce Dickinson - My personal favorite metal vocalist.
08. Ozzy Osbourne- I prefer Dio.
09. Paul Rodgers - good rock and roll voice, but metal?
10. Ronnie James Dio - I am not trying to be funny, but Dio's stands tall in metal. Brilliant vocals, brilliant harmonies, and committed to metal.
11. Axl Rose - voice fit the music perfectly. On "Appetite for Destruction" at least.
12. Sammy Hagar - I like this guy.
13. Geddy Lee - not into his voice but great songs regardless
14. Geoff Tate - "I never liked metal, I was never into 'that scene.'" Thanks buddy, you can go hang out with Michael Kiske.
15. Mick Jagger - sheer laziness on the part of the writer.
16. Jonathan Davis- I am still mad that they picked this guy to be the voice of Lestat (even if a better singer wouldn't have helped that movie any). I actually don't hate Korn, butthis guy doesn't deserve to be on the list.
17. Roger Daltrey - see comment beside Mick Jagger
18. Paul Stanley - the only good thing about this guy is so people can say "Matt Barlow sounds like Paul Stanley...with balls of iron!!!"
19. David Lee Roth- I never saw them live, so all I can judge are his albums...and I prefer Hagar better
20. Kurt Cobain - I can go my whole life without ever hearing another Nirvana song.
21. Maynard James Keenan - Overrated, but I like him.
22. Klaus Meine - never could get into the Scorpions.
23. Eddie Vedder - One of the reasons so much mainstream hard rock today SUCKS.
24. James Hetfield - fit the music back in the day, but I don't to hear anything after "...and Justice For All" ever again.
25. Trent Reznor- awesome.
26. Serj Tankian - an acquired taste
27. Layne Staley - liked the style when he was doing. All of his imitators can die.
28. Steve Perry - the voice of AOR.
29. Gene Simmons - I have my personal reasons for not liking this guy.
30. Joe Elliott - "Pyromania" rules. Then everything went to hell.
31. Jon Bon Jovi - critically underrated.
32. Alice Cooper - a personal hero of mine
33. Vince Neil - one of those guys whose voice fits the early music, but take him out of that element - ain't working.
34. Steve Marriott - who?
35. Lajon Witherspoon- one of the best mainstream hard rock vocalists in years.
36. Sebastian Bach - excellent.
37. Philip Anselmo - respect Pantera more than I like them.
38. Zack De La Roch - you hate Republicans. We get it.
39. Brian Johnson - not a terrible replacement.
40. Bret Michaels - not terrible as far as glam goes, but when Poison tried to get serious...pass.
41. Udo Dirkschneider - I love this guy if for no other reason he made Accept completely unmarketable to the mainstream
42. David Draiman - one of the few commercial hard rock vocalists to impress me, zoolgical outbursts and all.
43. Ian Gillian - I like what I have heard form him.
44. Marilyn Manson - guilty pleasure
45. Jeff Keith - good hard rock vocalist.
46. Chester Bennington- shut up.
47. Sully Erna - quit singing the same two songs over and over, those being #1: "Stay away from me," and #2: "Quasi-mystical ballad."
48. Lemmy Kilmister - the voice of grizzled, burnt out rockers. Love his voice.
49. Aaron Lewis - a disturbing waste of talent.
50. Brett Scallions - what is this guy doing on here?!?
51. Chino Moreno - I'm a fan, but more for the "quiet" vocals he does.
52. Rob Zombie - big fan
53. Anthony Kiedis - good until they went soft and mainstream
54. David Coverdale - the voice of hard-edged AOR.
55. Gary Cherone - loved Extreme until their egos went overboard and they tried to be the new Queen.
56. Andrew Wood - excellent voice, not really sure if he belongs on this list.
57. Scott Weiland - I liked him better than most of the others from that period
58. Tom Araya - looks like Paul's former roommate
59. Phil Lynnot - vastly underrated
60. Rod Stewart - what was the criteria for this list?
61. Scooter Ward - Cold was ok. Friends of a friend.
62. Ray Davies - I don't know who this is
63. Sonny Sandoval - I respect his attitude in some things, not a fan of his music
64. David Bowie - one of my favorite vocalists of _any_ genre, but why is he on this list?
65. Joan Jett - I respect her for her place in rock and for her support of our troops, but I think her voice is just flat-out noise.
66. Josey Scott - good Southern rock voice, one of the best in the mainstream...doesn't belong on this list
67. Perry Farrell - keeps me from being a fan of Janes Addiction
68. Scott Stapp - I can't believe that he is on this list. Even his former fans hate him.
69. Amy Lee - good...but no Anneke Van Giersbergen
70. Don Dokken - one of the best from his era.
71. Fred Durst - oh! I thought this was supposed to be the best vocalists list. I guess they meant this was the WORST vocalists list. In that case I am mad because they ranked Mercury and Bowie as worse than this bozo.
72. Mike Shinoda - argh?
73. Pepper Keenan - ok
74. Dez Fafara - seemed like a nice guy
75. Gavin Rossdale- go away, and take all the grunge has-beens with you
76. Blackie Lawless - always like the voice, even when the music sucks
77. Dave Wyndorf- never could get into them
78. Ann Wilson - good until MTV
79. Jimi Hendrix - more laziness
80. Ville Valo - one of my personal favorite rock, if not metal, voices. Sorry.
81. Peter Steele - huge fan.
82. Dave Williams - solid, but he is on the list for nostalgia than anything else.
83. Dee Snider - more of a fan of him as a guy than as a singer
84. Joe Lynn Turner - I like what I've heard
85. King Diamond - ever hear my impersonation of King Diamond singing "Jessie's Girl?"
86. Corey Taylor - surprisingly good.
87. Jamey Jasta - I don't see what the fuss is about. Maybe they put on an aweosme live show.
88. Justin Hawkins - your 15 are up, man.
89. Dave Mustaine - more respect than like
90. Ian Astbury - he has treated some of my friends like gold, others like crap. Objectively - I love the guy's voice.
91. Stephen Pearcy - jerk
92. Phil Mogg - who?
93. Biff Byford - Saxon is ok.
94. Cristina Scabbia - been a fan for many many years, and yes - liked her before I knew what she looked like.
95. Dani Filth - a personal favorite just for the sheer over-the-top nature of it
96. Wes Scantlin - man, I despise Pile of Crapp
97. Tim "Ripper" Owens - better when he is being himself
98. Joshua Todd - good rock and roll voice.
99. Kevin Dubrow - well, to give credit where its due, his band got me into metal along with Def leppard. These days though...nah.
100. Ray Gillen- [EDIT] my earlier comments were because I was confusing Gillen with someone else...d'oh! I like what little I've heard from Gillen, he was different in a time of spandex and hairspray.
Personally, I find it insulting that Anneke Van Giersbergen or Mikael Akerfeldt were not on this list. Or...
Well, I'd better stop. Hit Parader sucks balls. they are the anti-
