Just came back from Headbangers Open Air. Was a hell of a ride, normally it's a 6 houre drive but with some heavy traffic jams it became 9 or so. I'm at home now for half an houre to exchange luggage and leave for the coast and join the wive and kids, another 2 houre if I ever get there :p So it's gonna be a quicky and shorty review :kickass:

the trip ... was worth every penny !!
Saw memorable gigs of Vicious Rumors, Helstar (and suprise, suprise ; James doing some songs with Vicious Rumors !!!), Tyson Dog (one of the best NWOBHM bands I ever saw, with vocalist of Avenger), Angel Witch (that was simply awesome, golden gig !!!) and I simply loved the show of The Rods, that's some of the best hard rock I ever saw !!! other good ones were Q5 (& Nightshade), Neil Turbin (but mostly the Anthrax stuff) and Pretty Maids were okay too, especially the old stuff. Razor put on a pretty damn heavy end to the festival, they killed the last survivors

Will try to get some pics and vids on next weekend when I'm back !! My friend videotaped some good stuff. Gotta go now! cheers !

yo, just back from the coast...so a little more in depth review :)

Let's just start with the best ; Angel Witch. Kevin heas a new young band that is tight as an elephants underopants ! We offcourse got the complete "Angel Witch" album with a few extra early single material. I never saw angel Witch before and was a bit afraid one of my fav 80's bands would be a disappointment but it was just the opposite. I guess now that baphomet tattoo has gotta be done, haha... Here are some clips:

more to come tomorrow !!!

I think Heybourne vocals had declined a lot (he almost sounds thrash), but of course without been able to see them back in 1980 this would had been also a great show for me, alas...:(

Indeed Heybourne's vocals have become rougher, but he still has that special recognizable voice!

So, for the rest. First a little about what HOA is; it's in fact just a big Metal party in someone's garden. It's not that big really but over the years alot of famous 80's bands have played here. It's a bit like KIT but in open air and a bit smaller (although the bands playing here are just as good).
So from start on;
Thursday;
Lick the Blade : started just as we arived and heard them from a distance, nothin' special

Bullet; missed them becouse we went to check in at the hotel

Q5; first interesting band, very good live and offcourse the "Missing in Action" classic was the first song the fans shouted along;

Next up were Tank...Withouth the original singer it isn't really Tank. This guy sounded way to clean for Tank, but still overall it was a good gig !

Vicious Rumors closed on Thursday and they did a fantastic show. Als ex-vocalist StPierre did alot of old songs. Best band on Thursday for sure !!
The current vocalist Ronnie Stixx is awesome btw !!

On Friday Lonewolf opened. Again just heard a few songs from far becouse , nothin' special I think.

Memory Garden started of with a doom song, quit liked that, but for the rest they suddenly changed to a more progmetal band. Not bad !!

Next up were Piledriver. Saw them at KIT and they really sucked monkey balls there. Same story here, don't understand why they got them here, they must have seen the KIT gig ???

Next up were Enforcer and Jacobs Dream... Missed them becouse we went to eat some Schnitzel at a local restaurant...

Exxplorer, we saw them at KIT earlier this year and again they showed why they are one of the most underrated bands ever. Great musicians, crushing US metal !!! Strange they never get more than a 100 people to watch them at shows in the US :-/

Neil Turbin's "Deathriders" ... Mixed feelings about them; the old Anthrax songs sounded awesome but the Deathriders songs sounded bad. I think Neil Turbin needs a bunch of better musicians !

Helstar killed, slayed, ruled... Saw them several times the past years and they never let down...As most know or not know Rivera sung with Vicious Rumors a while. Rivera left VR in a fight but the guys made up and even played some songs together !!! Awesome !!

Pretty Maids hadthe hard job playing after Helstar...PM are a very good band, but their 90's music is so flat commercial at times. The good old (read "hard") stuff though is really good. Great musicians and vocalist !

Manilla Road closed on Friday....Mmmmm, I'm not a big fan, and so isn't my mate, so we left after a few songs. They played a 2 hour gig untill 2.30 AM or so. I think Manilla Road has more a cult reputation than actually being a great band, although fans will kill me for saying that :p

Saturday was opened by Zed Yago, a German band. Quit good in the 80's but the new (female) vocalist wasn't very good.

Portrait were next. Saw them at KIT and didn't like them. Back than they sounded like a very bad Mercyful Fate clone. The new vocalist is somewhat better though, but now the guitar player completely messed up with some solos I would do better after 6 months of practice. This band is widely overrated !!

Next up came the NWOBHM attack. First Cloven Hoof. Not my top favorit NWOBHM band but a very good gig anyway !! A few songs they were accompanied by the guitar player of Roxxcalibur, nice !!

Tysondog, another band that was on my "want-to-see" list for a long time. The original vocalist unfortunately isn't in the band anymore but the replacement vocalist (from Avenger) did a good job, funny guy !!Very clean and "heavy" guitarsound !! On of the suprises of the festival !

We missed Paradox and the french Killers for another batch of Wiener Schnitzels and returned for Tankard. You know, the funny German beer 'n' thrash band. The by now dead drunk Germans seemed to like it alot :)

Nightshade we only listened from the car as it was raining. Sounded like a good concert though, but we just didn't feel to stand out there in the rain....

For my taste the best 2 gigs followed being Angel Witch (see above) and The Rods. I expected for some reason a good gig from the Rods, but their hard rock/metal mix really sounded heavenly !! It was a very welcome change in style compared to the more traditional metal we mostly get at these festivals! The played a not so long gig, so they blend some songs together. But it was just the right time and place for this concert. Straight went to the goodies shop and bought the special edition Rods shirt for HOA !! Little guys with a big sound :p

Closer for the festival were Razor from Canada. They performed a skull crushing thrash/crossover show. No rest , just 1.5 houre of straight forward power. I guess the guys standing in front really took out their last pieces of strenght to mosh, thrash and bang... Although miles away from the Rods style, I quit liked the raw power of Razor !

That's all I guess... Left to say I will be there for sure next year, as announced bands already are Culprit, Raven, Jag Panzer, Roxxcalibur, Rock Goddes, Virgin Steel, Battleaxe and a bunch more !!!!!

I was awaiting to listen to this. I know that without Algy Ward is not really Tank, but I was ready to give Doogie White a chance. The main problem for me is that not only Algy is not singing (or playing bass) but also that Doogie does not contirbute to the chorus of 'Shellshock'. I have that song live in a WOA compilation and sounds mean compared to this one :erk:

Memory Garden started of with a doom song, quit liked that, but for the rest they suddenly changed to a more progmetal band. Not bad !!

Damn I kill to see MG live, one of my favorite doom bands, but like you said they are a bit more than standard doom. No clips from them?

Next up were Enforcer and Jacobs Dream... Missed them becouse we went to eat some Schnitzel at a local restaurant...

No food, drink or to pee is excuse to miss Enforcer , bad boy! Another one I would have killed to see (and even meet).

Pretty Maids hadthe hard job playing after Helstar...PM are a very good band, but their 90's music is so flat commercial at times. The good old (read "hard") stuff though is really good. Great musicians and vocalist !

Yes PM has changed a lot since the debut, but like you said they wonderful live. Ronnie still have what it takes. One more to the would have list.

Saturday was opened by Zed Yago, a German band. Quit good in the 80's but the new (female) vocalist wasn't very good.

Dunno, she's not that bad and I wa at a time crazy looking for Zed Yago, finally got a compilation and I must say that Jutta didn't got me either that strong.

OK, here I need to expand myself. For some reason I have never had CH as one of those bands I needed to check from NWOBHM. I listen once to some songs of them and didn't got impressed. This year two of my favorite German bands Abandoned (thrash) and Viron (power) combined members to form Roxxcalibur a tribute band that issued an album called "NWOBHM For Muthas" where they covered many unknown bands/songs with some well known ones (great album for fans of covers like Uli Kusch project Cath The Rainbow). Roxxcalibur played live at WOA with collaborations of Brian Ross (Blitzkrieg/Satan) and Dave Hill (Demon). Now for 'Gates Of Gehenna' (covered in their album) Kalli the guitar player from Abandoned join Cloven Hoof on stage. Needless to say that to me is the crown of the jewel :kickass:

Tysondog, another band that was on my "want-to-see" list for a long time. The original vocalist unfortunately isn't in the band anymore but the replacement vocalist (from Avenger) did a good job, funny guy !!Very clean and "heavy" guitarsound !! On of the suprises of the festival !

Tysondog is on my need to check bands of NWOBHM, I didn't know Ian Swift (from Avenger/Atomkraft) is their new vocalist, sadly on this clip his voice is not quite good, but I take your word that it was great, love Avenger.

We missed Paradox and the french Killers for another batch of Wiener
Schnitzels and returned for Tankard.

I'm gonna kill you, you miss Killers for more food and return for Tankard? C'mon Killers is a must be! Astounding speed metal in French, and you miss it? :err:

Left to say I will be there for sure next year, as announced bands already are Culprit, Raven, Jag Panzer, Roxxcalibur, Rock Goddes, Virgin Steel, Battleaxe and a bunch more !!!!!

Culprit!!!!!!!!, plus Roxxcalibur and Rock Goddess, I shit my pants again.

Big reply there Wyvern, thanx ;-)
I had the excuse to miss Enforcer and Killers becouse I already saw both of them before ! And you really need a break now and than at a 3 day festival. What's more, during those gigs it mostly was raining like hell. These 2 or 3 rain showers just came at the right dinner time moments :)

No, thanks to toyu for the great report and vudeo links. As for Enforcer and Killers, alright you're excused (but I still would have skip some other bands instead of them ).

Rain...I hate so much that shit. If I ever go to HOA and get some rain I'll go postal suicidal, I got enough of that damn water from the sky in here

That was "my year" for going to HOA but, unfortunately, it was the same weekend as Lorca rock festival in Spain and they had Carcass and Pestilence (2 bands I love and never seen before) and Voivod (I hadn´t seen them with Snake until last weekend).

For me, line up from HOA was excellent. Just a few comments about brilliant Carnut resume.

VICIOUS RUMORS: My friends told me St. Pierre just sang 4 songs, not the whole "soldiers of the night" album. Is it true? Besides, Ronnie is OK, but nobody (Rivera, Ronnnie, whoever,...) goes near Carl Albert. IMO it´s impossible to fulfill Carl shoes. He was so great.

ANGEL WITCH: I got Wyvern opinion. Heybourne vocals sound a little weird but listening the whole debut is a privilige.

Q5: nice to hear you liked them ´cause my friends said it was boring. Maybe it wasn´t too much trve :erk: for them or they were drunk.

PILEDRIVER: I saw them al Keep It true and yes, it was a bad joke.

PORTRAIT and ENFORCER: personally I prefer Portrait album (OK, is a "copy" but excellent) but playing life Enforcer has tons of energy.

KILLERS: Bruno, Killers leader and founder, is one the greatest people I´ve ever met. Just he´s wrong in his opinions about what´s France what´s Spain and all the Basque Country stuff. Don´t say to him that Killers hail from France . Just look at his guitar (with the Euskadi aka Basque Country flag). For the music, amazing.

Really? Bruno comes from the Basque Country? Never knew it, and yes I know all too well the whole Basque/Spain/France sensibility. Nevertheless I believe Killers is called a French band in all web databases.

I really wish some label reissue again their albums, the Brennus series are all OOP and usually terrible expensive at e-Bay (if you found them). I bought one in June from a guy in Greece and got lost in the mail , so I only owe 4 of their albums

Well, just like The Rods, Q5 isn't really 'true' metal, more kinda hardrock. Probably why some people didn't like them that much indeed...

Enforcer indeed is very good live. Those guys really play as their lives depend of it !!

Haha, I sometimes have some wrong Flemish thoughts too .

Well, not exactly from what it´s called Basque Country. More from Euskalherria. That´s the way basque nacionalists call the 7 regions (Basque country and Navarra from Spain and Iparralde from France). Bruno comes from Biarritz that it´s located in Iparralda and he has strong beliefs about his "country". In any case, the "real" Killers country is France, like you said.

An about their albums, I´d recommend you to write directly to Killers web. You can write in english, spanish, french or euskara . Bruno answers the email. He got most Killers cd that you can order from their pages. They are cheap as hell. I bought him 8 (all of them between 6 and 8 euros). Besides, if you write him he´ll be astonished from having fans from Costa Rica :headbang:. Like I said before the kindest musician I´ve ever met (and I write for a webzine and talk usually with a lot of musicians). Last time I saw him was a month ago at Metalway Festival in Saragossa (Spain) ready to rock with his wife and son longing for seeing Manowar and Barón Rojo.

I'll try English or Spanish, I read once and Euskara dictionary and I sware it was Chinese to me :loco:

Gracias! That will ve great, I'll do it for sure :kickass:
