Holy crap. So who here likes Hammers, Asunder, and Slough Feg?

When I heard that it was a release party, I thought for a second that they had a NEW album coming out.

Fuck, I don't know if it'll be the same without Scalzi. I'm not much of a Low Cost Beers fan, but even so...

I must admit, even I'm hesitant without Scalzi in the fold, together with the fact that this is their first gig with the new lineup.

But it's Cobbett, he knows what he's doing. The venue is awesome. Chewy is back on drums. New male vocals and guitar and new chick vox have me curious....Slough Feg in support really tips the balance in favor of going, if for anything just to stand next to Scalzi in the audience as he watches someone else sing his songs, hehe.

Scalzi is my favourite singer in the whole world. There's just something in his output that demands your full attention. An authoritative voice, one might say. When you combine that voice to the epic fucking compositions of John Cobbett, we gots ourselves a winner. If you take Scalzi out of that equation, it can't be as good...

Cheapest flight from here to SF must be like 1000+$, so I'm quite sure I'm not going.

Isn't the idea behind a release party supposed to have something to do with the actual release of an album? Next thing you know we're gonna have bands playing release parties for albums that aren't even theirs!

Heh, yeah. Although I imagine if Scalzi, Jamie, and Chewy hadn't left after the release of the album, they would have done it sooner.

So I obviously didn't make it to the show... Few problems came up in the end and I couldn't go. Watched the HoM new band videos, and in the end, after watching them I wasn't as disapointed that I had to miss out on it. Not that they were bad, I just felt that without Scalzi it sounded like they were missing something. He has a very unique, practically irreplacable, style of playing. I also wasn't too impressed with the noticable lack of stage energy by that band (granted it was small place and the stage was pretty small), or Patrick Goodwin's (The new guitarist/vocalist) vocals.

Like I said, I'm sure it still went great, but its not gonna be the same Hammers, and I wish I woulda had the chance to see the 2003- 2006 band (or the 2000 - 2002 band, I love The Bastard).

Asked my friend, and she said it was "sexcellent". So maybe it was just a 'meh' recording on the jewtube. Although, she also said they only played 3 pre Locust songs... Which, as much as I like Locust, I prefer the first 2 albums. So hey, to each their own.

Just got home from the show.

Slough Feg played to an audience of 50-75 people, but Scalzi didn't appear to notice. Only a half hour set, so it was almost all Traveller and Atavism stuff, but they closed with Down Among the Deadmen. And teased us with the Highlander opening riff, again. Cocksuckers. Probably the most energetic performance of the night, though.

Asunder bored the ever-living fuck out of me. I spent the set talking to my sister and a drunken Mexican guy referred to by all and sundry as "Señor Metal."

Hammers impressed. They played all of Locust Years, An Oath Sworn In Hell, and Doomed Parade, then did You Should Have Slain Me as an encore. Goodwin's voice is definitely a change from Scalzi's...he's sort of, mmm, punkish? Doesn't have that instantly recognizable tone or range, but he's got a lot of force behind his voice. Did fine on the Locust Years stuff, not quite as well on the earlier material.

The two chick singers do some really impressive harmony. Also, Sigrid (the keyboardist) is really goddamn hot.

Highlight was easily "Trot Out the Dead."

Did Slough Feg play any new songs (If it wasn't Tiger! Tiger!, how did it sound?).

Not suprised Asunder was boring... not exactly a band I could imagine translating well into live.

On a side note: "Señor Metal" is awesome. I met him at Venom... and I vaguely remember meeting him some other time, but I can't remember when (was probably the same day, just a different time... I had a 2 day hangover that whole weekend so i was out there :p).

Come on, you can't seriously make that sort of judgement based on a phone camera recording on youtube of their first ever warm up appearance with the new line up? Give them some credit here, it's not like they're auditioning for you. Jeez, I would have given my left arm to see this show, especially with the new line up.

BUT, to be fair, I don't yearn for anything because I already saw them on The August Engine Tour. And they were incredible. :D

No big shocker. I'm not sure what you're supposed to do when watching a band like Asunder play, other than stand at the bar and order more drinks. Maybe some wings too.

Good stuff. ("You Should have Slain Me" is probably one of my favorite songs of all time, any band, any genre).

Yeah, Sigrid is a babe, but so was Jamie back when she was in the band. I often remember that evening when I was talking to both Sigrid and Jamie and feeling like my knees could buckle at any time. :tickled:

Highlight was easily "Trot Out the Dead."

Niiiice. [/borat]

God I hope they come out east.

Do you guys like Asunder at all? I'm curious how long they got and what they played, because I don't get bored at all while listening to their new album at all.

I've only heard their stuff on myspace...and I think all that anyone's saying is that they might not be great for a live setting, perhaps better on CD with the headphones on, if you know what I mean.

I'll admit that the appeal of a live Asunder performance completely escapes me. I'd listen to them on CD while trying to focus myself on something, or just contemplate the mysteries of the universe (probably while high as fuck), but live? Completely lacking in the energy and passion that I look for from concert bands. They played for 45 minutes and appeared to play all of 2-3 different songs, but as far as I could tell it was just one long mass of droning notes and extended growls.

Not for me, I guess.
