Horrible acoustic drum sound

I don't know a whole lot about recroding drums, let that be said right off the bat.
If I understand correctly, is it possible to use the drum tracks as triggers for samples of good sounding drums? If so how do I go aobut doing this? The toms sound I have is beyond horrible.
