For an example: I plug my guitar into a Toneport (implying it can record just the dry signal as you said), record it in my DAW, alter the recorded track with a VST where I can use zillions of different effects. So why shouldn't that change my sound? When I have the dry audio track from my guitar in my DAW, I can do whatever I want with it. I can even do a paino tone over it.
