How did everyone hear get into metal?

I was into Rock/alternative. My friends dragged me in to Nu-Metal which isn't really metal. So I started out by listening to KoRn. I felt cool. Eventually I found that KoRn was not metal. Then I got into Metallica, everyone in High School thought they were gods. When some of their new stuff was released, I was disappointed. St. Anger was complete bullshit, so was Endgame. I got drawn away from that and into Death, Speed, and non-mainstream Thrash.

I then found out about Slayer, which I still love to this day.
From Speed Thrash, I got in to Death. Then some of the sub-genres of Death. So for around a year I was in love with the music.

I found out about Black not too long ago, and I loved it. I've checked out all of the other sub-genres, but they didn't do much.

I had about given up on music since I never heard anything I liked anywhere. Then I started listening to a fairly decent local rock station and heard a promo for Far Beyond Driven asking 'do you like metal that will grind your ears?' So I bought the tape and the rest is history.

Heard Soilwork - "Overload" on MusicChoice (TV channel for music; metal station, obviously) in 2003. Haven't looked back since!!

I hate to lable myself however i first started out as this pathetic little emo dork crying out for attention all the time, i used to get under constant stress which got me cutting and allot. One day I lost allot of the ole blood, was madness...
Got rushed to hospital where i spent most my summer holiday repairing myself! (No what i say is not true, i didn't cut) so there i was in that hospital bed listening to avril lavigne, and other punk & screamo / alternartive shit.

Then an old mate of mine from school came in with me gf, said have a listen to this (Was the scorpions & black sabbeth afterards) and i admit i just wanted to get out of the bed and start thrashin on the guitar or slamming on the drums, from that day on....(Wait, that's not what happened)

A mate of mine got me into metal bands, he got me listening to megadeth, iron maiden, metallica, slayer etc etc and i have to admit i kinda fell in love with the genre, since then i've listened to nothing but metal (With some gothic, symbolic and screamo) =]

I liked Nu Metal like Mudvayne and Slipknot(still do) and then got into groove metal and mainstream thrash/metal like Lamb of God, Pantera, Metallica, and Slayer, and Cradle of Filth around that time. Then I got into death metal like Deicide, Morbid Angel, and Six Feet Under shortly after that.t Then came black metal like Emperor, Satyricon, Dark Funeral, and Dimmu Borgir. I still listen to all of these bands but I'm getting more into technical death metal with hardcore influences and I like hardcore breakdowns so I'm still evolving towards liking more heavy music.

Buddy of mine brought over Venom "Black Metal" and Hellhammer "Apocalyptic Raids" vinyls and it was on.

Wow. I am actually envious of that. :P Best way to get into metal.

I remember liking some "heavier" songs from various shows I used to watch as a kid (like the DBZ theme song I guess). Then one day, a friend of mine introduced me to System of a Down, and it kinda started from there.

No joke, as a small child I begged my mom to play something heavier than "Play That Funky Music White Boy", which she didn't have. So my uncle began playing some classic rock and metal to me (Aerosmith, Zeppelin, Sabbath, Dio, etc.). Around the time I was maybe 8-11 I was really into nu-metal and alternative MTV rock. Then I saw the light with Metallica's self-titled and upon my cousin giving me the CD, I listened to Enter Sandman 7 times in a row. Eventually got into Dream Theater, Symphony X, then evolved into loving Opeth. When I saw the name Gojira around the time I was 13-14, I thought they were cool enough to check out, and finally started expanding my tastes to the massive array of metal I love now.
