Metallica - Saw the video for One during a special on MTV when Load was released(I'm young, so sue me

) and I was hooked.
In Flames - About three years ago my friend sent me an mp3 of December Flower. "Holy shit!" was all I could mutter
Dark Tranquility - since they're so closely tied with In Flames, it was only a matter of time, and about two years ago I was in a record store browsing and picked up Skydancer, since it was Anders singing on it(that's another way I get into new bands, seeing if they've done covers of other bands I like or checking out a side project or a previous band of one of the members of a band I already like
Opeth - Had a few extra bucks in my pocket(Graduation Money) and picked up Blackwater Park without ever hearing a single note they played(I heard a lot about them from various places). the next day I went back to the record store and picked up Still Life, MAYH, and MorningRise.
Slayer - oddly enough, Gremlins 2. I was watching that movie one day and heard a riff that I thought kicked ass. Turns out it was the bridge of Angel of Death, so I d/l'ed the whole song, then went out and bought Reign in blood a few hours later
