How do you believe Alexi writes his solos?

gkelter, yeah bit compared to an yngwie malmsteen solo for example which is pure improvisation..

of course he can fucking improvise, we can hear that on HCDR.. But on hatebreeder for example i think he worked out the solos before he recorded them

I never got this fuckin licks thing at all when you get a bunch of random melodys and place them together chances are they simply wont work! is it in key? PROBALLY NOT! Just learn a bit of theory etc start mixing in arpeggios then inverting them and a bunch of shit like that or maybe simply play something slowly and use your ears!

the way i do it is improvise the solos over the rythm sections till i here something worth keeping like a cool sweep or a nice melodie then i just work around the roots 3rds and 5ths and what not its not a science its all trial and error the more scales you know and the longer you have been playing yeilds better results because you have certain licks memorized and you know what works with what rythms

I guess I better start practicing more licks. :D

Thanks for everybody's replies.

Yeah, the solos I'm talking about in particular are mostly the ones on Hatebreeder. Most of the time the rhythm guitar is following the lead and changing with it perfectly.

Usually when I'm improvising I keep messing around until it sounds good in a recording. But then I don't know what the hell I just played which poses a problem for making the rhythm follow along.

Yeah §tygian, it is just like writing a whole new song. I'm definatly going to have to take more time on this than previously planned. :D So far up to this point all the songs I've written where kind of mediocre so I wasn't too worried about having a killer solo.

Judging from the video I got of them jamming on "Rebel Yell," looks like he improvises until he plays something he likes and then sticks with that.

Wow, I dont have that one.... could you send it to me ??
