How it happened this year:

I'm thinking Mercenary might have been the band that got the new management and the European tour that conflicted with PP.

That's exactly what I was thinking...knowing how much Glenn praised the new album...and the fact that they seem like the most requested and worthy band (as a previous opener) that would kick ass as a 3rd slot...also the fact that he harbored no ill will to their situation.

Very cool...cuz you know we'll see them grace a PPUSA stage again...

Rock on!

Congrats on getting some good talent together Glenn. While I will not be attending this year I am glad that you have the ability to make all these people happy.

There was some speculation on the board that Accept might have been a band, were they ever seriously considered if given the opportunity would you accept (ha!) such a band on your festival line-up?
Congrats again.

Very cool post...nice words for the man!

I, too, was wondering is Accept was even considered or approached. I half-expected the BW&BK festival to bring them. I wonder if Glenn toyed with the idea.

In retrospect...his "mystery band" would have had to have been a bigger name, stature, marquee, special-event kinda thing than Strato...who the hell could that have been...who's bigger than Strato?

Originally, I could only think of Helloween or a USA Accept show. A lot of people think D&W...I don't think so.

Now that I put all the pieces together...I'm thinking it was a CG reunion, but they couldn't get Midnight confirmed with the other band members, and Glenn wasn't going to wait for them to shit-or-get-off-the-pot (personally, I think the man is taking a horrible chance with the ever-volatile Strato...haha!).

Anyway...the beauty is it will probably all work out for future PPUSAs...the future oppotunities for band like SA, D&W, Masterplan, Mercenary, etc.

Hell...maybe one day we'll pull Shadow Gallery out of their shell or the broomstick out of Jim Matheos' ass...haha!

Also...maybe one day Glenn will put out his book and we'll discover all these juicy tidbits once and for all...

Bottom line...it's gonna be a hell of a show...like always!

Rock on!

Well, I am with you on the ACCEPT and ANGEL DUST thing, BenJAMin. I would have much rather seen those two bands than Angra, Conception or Orphaned Land. But my wife and I are co-sponsoring Symphorce, and I can't wait to see PC69, so it's cool.

I do, that is why I didn't ask you directly.

I could be wrong, but I think he meant, if you knew much about business, you'd already know the answers to your questions or why they're not going to be answered. Regardless, I think Glenn already is pretty darned open about PPUSA and what goes into it.

ISNT THERE AN OLD 80'S METAL BAND CALLED 'MYSTERY'?
HAHA

There was a band named Mystery in the movie Detroit Rock City anyway!! :D

Glenn, congratulations on the great lineup. It must have been a lot of work (and worrying). Just out of curiousity, is Watchtower a band that you would ever consider having at a future ProgPower or am I just wasting my time advocating them? Along with Fates Warning, they were the first prog metal band (they did prog metal back in 1985!) and without a doubt the most talented one before Dream Theater (and after, for that matter). In my opinion, Sieges Even attempted to copy Watchtower's sound on their first album (although it is a more watered copy) before attempted to copy Fates Warning on their second and third albums. It wasn't until their fourth album that Sieges Even came up with a very original sounding prog album that, in my opinion, is great (although not metal). I wouldn't mind seeing Sieges Even but Watchtower would be the ultimate treat. They may be from the 80's but they were way ahead of any of their contemporaries and unlike some prog bands today, they didn't drench their sound with layers of keyboards.

Just out of curiousity, has anyone here ever heard any of Mekong Delta's music? I ordered one of their albums awhile ago but haven't received it yet. I heard they have a good prog-thrash sound, similar to Watchtower's but different.

I have to see Fates Warning with John Arch before I die... Glenn, you are my only hope!
Thanks for trying, I appreciate it.
Please try again for next year.
That is all

I doubt he was trying for Fates with John Arch (makes no sense); I just don't get Fates (a chance to headline the premier US metal festival and they are oblivious to it all). I'll never understand them.

Thanks for sharing, Glenn!
It helps us all understand just what kind of trouble goes on behind the scenes to put on such a show that much more. I'm personally happy with 80% of the lineup, though I only guessed 10% of it correctly. Perhaps next year, Bernd Aufermann and Jim Matheos will wisen up. Somehow, I doubt that with Jim. If anything, I would suggest pushing for a John Arch appearance instead. Then again, what do I know about putting on a show?

Stay metal. Never rust.
Met-Al

Psychotic Waltz. Damn. That would have been awesome. Also, not that you want to be thinking about it or anything, but may I suggest Mechanical Poet for next year. As for this year, Orphaned Land and Conception, as well as Therion, will be unbelievably AMAZING! I wish I could go, but unfortunately, it's after I start college. I wish I could see Orphaned Land live though, because Mabool was definitely one of the best cds of last year and one of the best cds I have ever listened to.

To belabor the Accept point, I think we already are getting about as old as we can get with Progpower, seeing as how three of the top bands had their best releases in 1997(I'm speaking of Holy Land, Flow, and Visions here). Not that they are tired, far from it. But to reach all the way back to freakin' 1983 for Progpower, which is when Accept peaked. You'd have to call it Classicrock fest or something.

Agreed completely. Of course, you and I aren't picking the bands... but I like to think of ProgPower as being a bit more contemporary rather than being a nostalgia fest featuring the likes of Accept and Pretty Maids (BWBK fest would be a more appropriate venue for such bands).

Actually something just came to mind. Rage... whose first album came out in 83 or 84 I think and had two prior to that when they were called Avenger. Even though there was maybe a hundred people in the venue that's still a respectable big name band that are definitely from the eighties.

I'm still holding out for a Pretty Maids show though in the US wherever it may be.

Ben

Yeah, but Rage still puts out albums that are probably better than what they did in the 80s.

Accept peaked in the mid 80s, probably earlier. I don't hear people talking about Objection Overruled, or whatever it was called. Think it came out in the early 90s. Anyway, that would be because it wasn't a very good album.

I do have Breaker though, and that rocks pretty hard.

This is my final post on the subject, and indeed on this board until next year. Before I go I want you to consider this. I don't know what song sample you heard that so shocked and appalled you with it's lack of lyrical sophistication. However, this is the same festival that just a few short months ago had the headliner perform a song called "Lavatory Love Machine" which is far sillier than anything Accept ever recorded. Perhaps the arguments that Accept has not been active in several years have some justification from keeping them off the show. However, to act like these more modern bands are so far reaching that their music has nothing to do with the 80's (Metal's highest point by far) is only denial.

It's not so much about the year it came out.....but the style of music.

Glen,

If Crimson Glory (original) was not the secret band can you give us any info if you considered them for a possible reunion. was there any developments? Since Midnight and Ben was at the festival last year, there must be some sort of talks about this.

Well....if you're not going to say anything else, I guess I won't......but Rage has a style that fits with the festival, and Accept doesn't really seem to......and in my opinion, they're not really a very good band from what I've heard. And by "80's band," I wasn't talking about bands from the eighties, I was talking about the style of music that was popular in part of the eighties.
