How kickass is your local scene?

Melbourne Australia, probably has the best of the metal scene - the biggest problem with the metal scene in Australia is that we are so remote.

Loads of power metal - Black Majesty, Vanishing Point, Pegasus, Eyefear

And fuckn' Poker Machine's are killing the live venues, Sydney had loads of live venues, as Real Estate prices went up and poker machines took over venues - the live scene died :(

I think Oz could have one of the better scenes of the world, if only more people got down to gigs and bands did more to get themselves out there. We definatley have some great bands all around the country. They just need more support.

Good point - what makes a local scene is support, punters getting off their bums and going to shows

I'd reckon insurance would also play a part in killing it off - see metal for the brain has stopped :(

My god how can you stand playing at a place like that? Even the small bar venues here at least have stages.... I would never play with a security guard like right in front of me...

Thats actually our buddy they don't even have security or anything its real cool cause they pay very well for bringing so many people. Unlike most places that wont pay you crap and are always in horrible area. Yea i love stages and bigger venues myself also!!

western massachusetts here. home to killswitch, shadows fall, acatia strain, all that remains, zuess, zing studios and more. there are some good clubs to play and we are close to worcester and boston. metal is alive and well in western mass.

That's nothing compared to our local scene

The scene of the NW suburbs of Chicago consists of screamo core, whatever the fuck that is, and pretentious avant garde douchebag music.

Oh yeah, blues is big in Chicago too, of course. Nothin' wrong with that though, unless it's played by a bunch of 45 year old white guys who wish they were SRV, or some floppy-haired John Mayer wannabe, which pretty much make up 95% of the blues population...:erk:

Here in Austin, some notable metal bands are:

Stoner Rockish:
The Sword
Giant Squid

Black Metal:
Vesperian Sorrow (very symphonic and shredding...think Dimmu with amazing guitar shredding)
Vex (more blackened, melodic death)
Ruins of Honor (similar to Vex)
Abythos (Doom/Death/Black hybrid)

Grind:
Pleasant Valley -love this band...I would try out for the 2nd guitar position but my work schedule does not allow it.

Power/Progressive:
Meyvn (think Dream Theater but heavier/darker)..these guys are amazing

Traditional Heavy Metal:
Ignitor -Female fronted also with a female guitarist

Super-Techincal math-core with keyboards:
Azoth -amazing band

Thrash:
Blood of Patriots
By Any Means Necessary
Peyton Gin

Brutal Death:
Sarcolytic
This genre is pretty saturated with lots of bands sounding the same.

Of course we have all the Lamb of God/Pantera/Metalcore soundalike bands that saturate the metal scene everywhere with a small number that stick out.

There's lots more in other non-metal genres, but all the above bands are definitely worth checking out.

Our scene in Windsor Ontario is pretty crappy. It's difficult to find gigs in this area and bands are exploited (read: lucky to get paid for a gig).

However, this area has major potential to be the "Next Seattle" (owing mostly to the fact that a majority of the bands in this area are lame generic rock or emo). We do have a few quality metal bands brewing in this area though.

Oh yeah, and it helps having OzNimbus to locally produce metal albums as well.

Auburn is a 1/2 hour from Syracuse (also big metal scene there). We have had Cannae come through, If Hope Dies are from here, Manowar  are also native to Auburn, we also have had It Dies Today come through, um.... I know there are others. Our scene is primarilly (although not myself) strait edge hardcore. I am pretty sure that video that I posted was some sort of strait edge fest.

Well, to be honest, the Australian scene is doing pretty decently. It seems quite a few people know of Psycroptic, who (if I have my facts right) have had a US tour with Necrophogist. Dungeon have toured Europe with Megadeath, Vanishing Point have toured Europe with Sonata Arctica and played Waken (once again, if memory serves correct) and Black Majesty, who supported Nevermore in Melbourne are playing Waken next year.
