How is your local music scene?

local "scene" is bullshit

there's a small handful of bands full of kids that all sound the same, and then a bunch of older dudes who play covers in bars

pretty much not even worth fucking with local bullshit around here

In the core of sac its not too great. The biggest of the big around here are Damage over Time, Malevolent, Sexciety, Bell Tower Sniper, Music Membrane, Enemy Inside, Dismal Lapse.

While I enjoy enemy Inside as I have opened up for those guys, I was in the sister band of Malevolent, our rehearsal space was across the hall from Sexciety and not too far from Drop 7 which their front man is good friends with my uncle. Their recorded music however makes them sound like a Hatebreed copy. The only other band that stick out to me, other than Drop 7 is Soul Distortion, but they are similar to Alice in Chains. Honestly I liek Soul Distortion more than any other band around here.

Just listening to the top local bands, and actually liking Man Automatic, kinda generic 90's rock, but still pretty good.

I was thinking more like Kuru, Kolosson, Chronaexus, Killgasm, Slaughterbox, but I know what you're saying.

Music Membrane hehe....I take it you mean Mucus Membrane? ha

I know you guys have talked alot about the bands so far but you cant have a music scene without local music fans.

I've noticed that nowadays kids (lets say 15-25) just aren't interested in going to local shows, unless they are directly friends with someone in the band that is playing.

And its like that for all the metal bands around here, including the good ones.
Every once in a while I run in to some kid who's like "Hey are you going to so-and-so show this weekend? Those guys kick ass!" but its rare.

Venue owners end up trying to force pointless shows down band's throats, throwing anyone on a bill as long as they can bring some friends to the show.
They will put a show together consisting of a death metal band, a christian rock band, and a reggae band for all they care.

Maybe its because the majority of local bands suck big balls, and or are just carbon copies

Maybe its just because there is an overload of bands.

I've even noticed that national shows have been drawing less of a crowd.

Hi guys
So, this is my first post here. Been reading and learning quite a lot. It's absolutely awesome a place like this exists. I'm gonna make this post count :)

The scene in Israel is pretty interesting. We got tons of bands, not a whole lot of audience but the big local metal acts here can attract the occasional 400-500 people per show. We got some nice flow of bands from abroad touring here lately, and it gets a lot of fresh blood pumping into the scene. Bigger Israeli names such as Orphaned Land or Salem often enjoy mainstream media attention here. The quality of bands, as everything in life, is a Gaussian curve. But I really like the scene, I'm down with it. Been in it for most of my life, playing keyboards for numerous bands and projects.

As we're located in fucking nowhere in the middle east, we suffer from the Australian syndrome too. Nowhere to go, no one to scout. A band that wants a piece of the pie must travel abroad, often to Europe to enjoy a solid album production or touring.

A few local names you might want to check out. I might be a bit biased.
But I think all the bands here worth a listen.

Acropolis (Powerprog, my band. Our guitar player sometimes posts here too. Will post new songs mixed by Tue Madsen when we're done with them).

There's a ton more names from smaller to bigger bands that might be familiar to you such as Amaseffer or Betzefer.

yeah those are surrounding bands, and for the most part, most of them almost are never playing sacramento shows, they mostly stick to playing near the bay. When my band finally gets a full lineup, I think we will try to play more shows in the bay area, hell of a lot more venues and a lot more bands to play with, keeps shit fresh as opposed to playing the same shows with the same bands endlessly watching the same 20 guys show up to a lineup they haven't gotten bored seeing 10+ times in the past year.

And yes I meant MUCUS membrane. I just tried typing that over and over again, apparently my muscle memory things music is mucus.

Well when you get shit together let me know. We've been booking a lot of shows out here and are getting ready to do a lot at the start of the year. Surprisingly enough, it's the same shit out here. Attendance is low, unless you can get on a Whore for Satan show in SF with some nationals.

The music scene here in Phoenix is pretty good. It is very diverse, as there are a ton of DeathCore bands here, a lot of the Thrash revival bands here, a lot of straight DeathMetal bands, and then a ton of the Attack Attack shit and the like. So all in all its very healthy, just very diverse. But they have been closing down venues like crazy, and we are all struggling to find new good places to play and make our own again. So sometimes we just rent halls to play in or we have a lot of really big house parties hehe. Here are a few good bands that my band usually plays with very often:

Vehemence
Hypatia
Rising Pain
Viraemia
Dresden
Vektor
He Who Binds Himself
Meathook
Unholy Monarch

...and a ton of others. The list can get pretty long, but those are the guys that we usually play with pretty often. We're always down with show swapping too, so if someone wants to swap let me know! It would be cool to play some shows with other fellow sneapsters :headbang::kickass:

The scene is big in Gothenburg.

There is a big diversity to the metal scene. I dont pay to much attention but i think Deathmetal is dominant.

In flames and Dark Tranquillity.

Having to fight all those Legion slavers and deathclaw packs, I'd hardly think musical originality is high on the priority list....

oh wait.... I just exited Fallout.

LOL ... but you are totally right. This is the entertainment capital of the world. This is the reason bands like Steel Panther doing covers in casinos gets $20 a shot for tickets and they make 2 to 5k a night depending on the casino.

Original bands have 2 venus to play in this town. Cheyenne Saloon which is pay to play. you buy 50 tickets for $5 and sell them for $10 if there is a headliner, or you get tickets for free and whatever you sell them for you keep if its only local bands (extremely rare).

The other venue has no PA and is just a big room that bands can play in.

All of the bars in town cater to the 70s and 80s rock bands and pay about $300 a night, and you need to bring your own PA and engineer.

Casinos is where it is at in this town. bands make anywhere from $1000 to $5000 depending on the casino and the bands draw. My band usually clears about $600 to $1000 a night here in Vegas. We are one of those in-between bands. Big following, but we are too heavy to play the casinos so we usually work out a deal for a percentage of the bar and our crowd drinks like crazy.

We do 70's 80's 90's metal. AC/DC, Skid Row, Pantera, Metallica, Megadeth, Maiden, Scorps, Lynch Mob, Dokken .... you get the idea.

Wow, looking at all your posts make me feel blessed to live right in between to major forces in the Metal scene haha

And yes, Upon A Burning Body is my favorite band from San Antonio, Go see them live. It will blow you away.

There is really only one venue in my town of New Braunfels which is about 55,000 people. Its called the Harmony Sweet. But unfortunately, most of their shows are more pop-punkish stuff (which is a style of music I enjoy), but this venue is really the only place that has Metal shows.

But in San Antonio, BY FAR the best venue has got to be the White Rabbit. They will let your crappy band that only has 2 fans play with As I Lay Dying or other touring acts, which is cool because they give bands a chance to get their name out there. Other sweet venues include Sunset Station (If your band is capable of bringing a 750+ crowd, and alot bands do), Scout Bar, and Jack's Patio.

My favorite venue in Austin is probably Emo's (don't let the name fool you though), along with Red 7 and some other places.

From Michigan, more precisely downriver.

We have shit, aside from maybe two bands. Cover bands, scene trash, horror core (ICP wannabe shit) and washed out punk bands.

again pretty much what Ermz said. The issue is, as he stated, there's no where to go if you're good here. Like... you get to a point where you are really good, you play to about 250 people or so on a really good night, you do the rounds through australia.... and that's it... there's no real support network here, no way of being promoted very well at all...

So we all start looking overseas, it tends to work out much better much sooner. There's legions of bands around Australia who've been at it for years, and are at that point of being a "good" aussie band, and then you ask anyone OS and no one knows who they are. It's a shame really..

Just to plug some:

Eye of the Enemy
Anno Domini
Orpheus
In Malices Wake
Belakor

Not deathcore, I'm sure others can chip in for them ;)

By far? You simply must be mad. I have yet to attend a single show where no equipment failed completely, and all but a few shows have had abysmal openers.

The Scout Bar (now defunct, by the way) had decent sound - even considering its unfortunate shape and stage placement - and put better bands on stage... if they bothered at all to take time away from national acts with time limits, it was worth it. They also hired people who knew how to put gin in a gin and tonic, they could get rid of people causing trouble with ninja nonsense without just removing anyone convenient and suspicious, and they weren't located in an awful part of town with parking essentially a few residential roads with lighting barely above 'passing headlights'. The Rabbit may be better than nothing on a good day, but that's all I'll give it. The Warehouse shows potential and has definitely improved since the last owner, although they have some security issues that need to be addressed.

Red 7 should have been condemned ages ago, but my complaints with Austin don't belong here.

You're still failing to mention a certain few *big* names out of this area... how well do you know San Antonio and Austin metal history? I don't know much myself, but it's concerning that you haven't named a certain brilliant guitarist from SA and his Austin-based bands *or* his brother and his drumming jobs...

Jeff

Dude, I've been to probably 20+ local shows at the rabbit (and seen about 10 national acts at the Rabbit) and have yet to see any equipment failure what-so-ever. I have no idea what you are talking about. My band has headlined several shows there and we have had no problems at all. The only thing that sucks about the Rabbit is the little Jam stage they have. Its useless.
