Hours? Days? Months? Years? Decades? Did you need to be there when it was initially released? Does it have to have some sort of personal significance behind it?

Personal significance helps greatly, but not always necessary. The least amount of time for me to give a 10/10 score was Kayo Dot, took me probably 8 months and who knows how many listens. The longest that I can recall is Tool - Lateralus: over 3 years, about 5 concerts, and at least 1000 hours of listening. Finally I thought "shit yeah, this is 10/10 BUY OR DIE!!!111" (yes, I think in trailing off exclamation points turning into numbers).

No, that shouldn't matter whatsoever because nostalgia can be associated to albums that even you yourself would only give 7/10, for example, but you still love them to death.

Does it have to have some sort of personal significance behind it?
Yeah, but I think it should then be divided between 'personal + nostalgic significance' and 'personal + historical significance'. The latter makes for a much more interesting list, otherwise what are we doing here? Showing each other our childhood holiday snaps? :loco:

There is a huge difference when it comes to personal v. historic albums. Very few albums in my Top XX lists are historic, but that isn't what makes me think of an album as completely perfect. A classic is not always a masterpiece and vice versa.

I dunno. One day I just know that "this album transcends the very fabric of space and time itself and is immortal, forever granted a place in the hall of gods, fame and great heavy metal albums." Shit just clicks eventually and I know it.
This pretty much nails it.

Absolutely, but I said "Personal + Historic". You can't beat that. It is the royal flush. If you were waiting in line for Sabbath's vol. 4 or Maiden's Number of the Beast, and you would award them with 10/10 for personal preference, then motherfucker, you just beat the house.

A 10/10 album is an album that you will never grow tired of hearing no matter what. You can listen to it 3-4 times in a row and you will still not grow tired of it.

Yeah I got agree with Tranquillian on this.

To me its an album you dont want to end. An album you listen to again right after listening to it in its entirety, because you want to listen to it again.

The rule is a minimum of 2 months. You must then play the album 3 straight times without feeling like you need to take a break and loving it each time. If this criteria is met, the album becomes a desert island disc.

Generally it requires multiple listens in silent awe throughout, strong identification with every moment and not being annoyed by a single note, and should also have some personal and/or historic value, but the latter isn't a prerequisite, especially for albums in which the realization that you are experiencing something revolutionary grabs you from the first listening session...only a few new releases have ever done that for me.

Fuck, I dunno if I can do this for ANY album I've ever heard.

Depends, sometimes it hits me right away (Górecki, Watain), sometimes it takes weeks (SMRC, Ondskapt), and sometimes years (DMDS).

Just thought of one that took forever: NIN - The Downward Spiral. Owned it for over 10 years, just realized how absolutely essential to life it is like a year ago.
