I want to record a cover of this song but I honestly don't know how to achieve the sound for the staccato part that is present throughout most of the song. the rest was no problem figuring out. Any pointers?

that intro guitar thing?
nice amp, finger pick for that smoothness, whammy pedal
the whammy pedal is all you need for it :D

Yeah, although you could use a Whammy set to +1 octave, the Boss is a lot smoother (you don't get so many weird digital noises when you rock the pedal forward). If you don't have access to either, you can just automate a pitch-shifter in your DAW.

Awesome song by the way - I've covered it myself. The 'verb on the drums is mad!
