How would you play "Bleed" Meshuggah??

However, on patterns like RLR RLR RLR RLR (typical metal breakdown beat), I tend to like playing alternating like RLR LRL RLR LRL instead so yeah... I guess I'm for both ways :) If it works, it works, it's all individual.

See I'd play that RRL RRL RRL RRL... Acoustically though it's hard to get it to sound as even and intense as RLR RLR RLR sounds... I just have a hard time switching the beat from foot to foot... Like, with RLR LRL RLR LRL each grouping switches which foot is on the beat and which is inbetween... It feels way more natural for me to keep the right side on the beat the whole time with the left side filling in the blanks rather than switching it up... Easier for me to lock into the tempo when each limb is staying consistent against the pulse.

But it's much more fun to alternate! :) It's also great practise, it boosts your control by crazy amounts once you're comfortable with it. But sure, RRL RRL could work quite well also but I would still aim for RLR RLR really.

As a general rule though, whenever I play a tricky pattern, I try to play it as it is "supposed" to be played. With that I mean I play R or L strokes according to how they would land if the beat continued with notes on each 16ths or whatever. Like RLR RLR RLR RLR pattern for example, it is "supposed" to be play like that if you would assume that it's RLRLRLRLRLRLRL but you just pluck out every 4th hit, which leaves it like RLR RLR RLR RLR etc.

Yeah I'm doing the same, but playing it as if it's a 16th note roll done with all heel-toe so it's more like a single stroke 8th note roll because I'm a cheating piece of shit! Haha...
