I always loved the last 4 Opeth cd's, and didn't care for Orchid.

Well tonight I listened to it. I mean really listened to it. Headphones and all, and even though I've done this before.. tonight it clicked.

Until tonight the order I ranked the albums was:
1.) Morningrise, My Arms Your Hearse, Still Life, Blackwater Park
5.) Orchid

Orchid just joined the other 4. Mwahahaa!

Orchid is a bit more scattered than the others, probably for the following reasons:

1) It's their debut; first shot at songwriting
2) The material is from several years of work
3) i don't know, it just seems like there should be more.

Despite this though, there are so many beautifully raw moments in this album. There are a lot of aspects of it that will always surpass their other albums. Now i want to listen to it...

They're all excellent, but for some reason I enjoy the hunger the band seems to emphasize in Orchid that isn't present in the other offerings. I still don't know for sure which one is my favorite, but I would say MAYH if probed by police.

blackwater park or still life are my fav's...but deliverance will be up at or around the top its growing on me heavily...mayh is the earliest opeth album ive listened too, the others seem too 90's death metal for me. too early metallica sounding, im more of a melodic progression, with atmosphere fan myself

ive just recently gotten into orchid... I saw a live video of Forest of October and that was my start. Im gonna have to say the last 4 albums are what ive only listened to before that. But its making me think opeth is great on ALL their cds... Maybe ill download more of orchid soon...

Orchid took almost a year to sink in - I listen to it more than any other Opeth disc now.

Well I'm glad you put the headphones on cause now you realise the magnifacince of Orchid I've alway loved Orchid and to rank opeth cd. . . I'd have to say that their all #1. . . exept maybe deliverance, but that's what I said about bwp when it first come out *shrugs* I'm sure it will grow on me, don't get me wrong it's an awsome cd and you should definatley PURCHASE it, I know I am

I'm surprised about what everyone says about Orchid.... It was the last Opeth cd I heard and judging from what everyone says about it and the such high praise Morningrise gets, I expected it to be a not-so-hot version of Morningrise. But I was really impressed.... I think it is much better than Morningrise.... It just seems so much more dynamic, with better solos and riffs.... (though the riff at 13:38 in Black Rose Immortal is the greatest guitar riff ever, imo)

I agree...Orchid is definately better. Better riffs and the songs are more organised.

In my humble opinion....

I agree with mostly everybody. Orchid is #1 in my book. I think it is so much better than Morningrise. There's more emotion and energy in Orchid, and the music is so much better. Btw, so are the vocals (growls).
