i got Emperor's 'prometheus' today

I'm sorry, anything that sounds like gloomy Final Fantasy/Zelda/Castlevania game music should not be marketed as an Emperor album...it has nothing to do with being a black metal purist.

It's always kind of amusing to see all kinds of would-be music critics talk on the internet about how much more they know about what a band's sound should be, than the actual band knows.

exactly, the bands direction is there own choice.from all of the emperor stuff i have heard.it sounds like they have never intended to be pure mlack metal ever since samoth got out of jail.they realised that there vision was stupid really, and decided to make it all about the music instead of a soundtrack to there vision.

thats basically what purists dont like, the fact that it doesnt represent the satanic vision anymore.the only dumbass who is still hung up on that is the count, and look where he is.

And it's always nice to see the same kind of tiresome retorts such as yours...it's always better to make an ad hominem attack then to make an actual point, isn't it? "OMG, if u can do better, why don't u write an album!!1" This wasn't much of a band choice...Ihsahn already had the album on the table when Samoth and Trym were called into the studio.

This isn't about being a black metal purist, since Emperor was never even a "twu black metal" kind of band to begin with. It's just the fact that when Samoth and Ihsahn are both writing parts for a song, it creates a dynamic sound that's not so one sided as Prometheus. There's simply no balance in Prometheus.

I truly enjoyed Prometheus myself, but I can see what Yeah's saying: this was Ihsahn's album. From the very beginning, this was his brainchild, and in reality, there was no need for Samoth to even record, if you think about it. Yeah's not saying that it isn't a black metal album, he's just saying it's not an -Emperor- album because -Emperor- wasn't fully involved; just Ihsahn.

All that aside, as I said, I loved the album. :)

to be honest, i don't care who's written it to be honest. i do personally hear balance on prometheus, both in relation to the rest of emperor's catalogue and DEFINITELY in relation to the rest of the black metal scene. prometheus is ANYTHING BUT one dimensional. i hear pure brutality at times, others i hear sweeping beauty and grace. usually in the same song. even my dad likes that album and he's a classical purist. i've tried playing him their other albums but he didn't seem interested in them for the most part.

I used to really want Prometheus until i heard Emperor's older stuff. The two songs that are hailed as two of their greatest (The Loss and Cure of Reverence and I Am The Black Wizards) aren't that great, but the two i've heard from Prometheus (The Eruption and Tongue of Fire are awesome!). So i guess i'll download a few more songs and judge. I'll download just one more from Prometheus and see what i think then. If their older material is much like those two supposed classic emperor songs, though, i won't be getting into them much.

Ignore everything i just said. I went and listened to those two songs again and wow!
