I know the secret of Immortal's wall of sound

Damn straight Owen.
Especially if you work with audio in any way, shape or form, not wearing ear plugs is a seriously terrible decision.
I don't give 2 fucks if people think I'm a faggot for wearing ear plugs. I'd rather look like a "faggot" for 2 hours at a gig, rather than have hearing loss that will last for way more than 2 hours.......most likely permanent.
I'd rather have a mix or mastering job done by someone who has taken good care of their ears, rather than someone who is too cool for school and thinks ears plugs are "gay".

Last time I went to a gig anyway I had a few moments without plugs and all the sound I could hear was just KSHSHfhHFHHShshhs and half the people there were wearing earplugs anyway. Honestly I think it sounded better with the plugs in.

But yeah, as you say Harry, throughly terrible decision to not wear them if you rely on your ears for your money.

Sonny, yeah man, I went to a couple of local gigs when I was just getting into music without them and got away with only temporary tinnitus at the time, but I was lucky that I got smart quick because if those had been commercial gigs instead of shitty local ones with tiny PA's then I would probably be half deaf by now, the amount they pump out at proper gigs is fucking stupid.

I didn't end up wearing plugs for Sunn unfortunately. I had some shit cheapy ones and I couldn't hear ANY details, it was all just a big rumble, so I had to take them out.
Somehow my hearing is still pretty good, I have no idea how.
But yeah, I'll probably invest in some proper expensive molded ones so I won't be sacrificing detail.

As terrible as it is, I'd rather be deaf and hear all the details than have amazing hearing but not be able to hear shit from the ear plugs.

Ask me again when I'm 60 though, I doubt you'll get the same answer.
Youthful naivety for the win I guess.

I don't know if it exists in USA, but this brand sells sound-fidelity earplugs that are of good quality, and not so expensive if you think of it. These one cost 30 euros : http://www.acoufun.com/Nos-produits/FIDELITY-ER-20.php

I really recommend any of you that sort of earplugs. Since I got them, my live gig experience is really better. It doesn't remove as much dB as basic earplugs, and it doesn't remove a frequency more than another. The result is that you ear is protected, but you still have a loud perceived volume (as if you were, let's say, at 2/3 of volume in your iPod) and you can clearly distinguish the details.

I'm sure some equivalent exist online in USA or other countries. It's really really worth it.

Heh, could have been shitty acoustics at the venue, because even the times I had to use cheapass shitty ear plugs before I could afford good ones, it always sounded better with them in, because the gigs would be so loud anyway that when i took the ear plugs out for a few secs to hear how it sounded, it just sounded distorted because it was overwhelming my ears

Harry, it did sound very distorted, but with plugs it was like I was hearing the gig low-passed at 200hz. Stood there a/b-ing the two for a while and no plugs won out for me.

every video i can find doesn't use these fake props

did they only do this once or something?

Anyone with half a brain would bring ear plugs to a gig.
I ALWAYS wear ear plugs to gigs, no exceptions. To do otherwise is just plain idiotic.
It amazes me that when I go to gigs people are still retarded enough to go to gigs without ear plugs.

while this is true, you can not blame the people going to concerts for not bringing ear plugs. This is not a majorly talked about thing, or something that is promoted or advertised to do (outside of the people in the audio world of course). So a 14 year old kid that goes to a metal show is exposed to dangerous dbspl levels, its his fault for not knowing better?? that is simply too harsh to say, i think.

Besides, you know what is more dangerous then a metal show? dance clubs. They are blasting music way above 100 dbspls at most dance clubs across america. And what puts it over the top is that they are blasting this music NON STOP for several hours. The longevity of that is what is really dangerous and could cause hearing loss. At least with a rock show, you are getting breaks in between songs and bands.
I think public safety groups need to pay more attention to this kind of stuff.
You cant just say the public should know better, cause i dont think they know how dangerous it actually is.

on an additional note....... Immortal sucks
