Or you can both take your time and think about how you really feel for each other. Losing a friend really hurts, but you'll be lying to yourself if you accepted him as a lover when you don't really feel anything for him except as a friend.

Or: Never date someone that doesn't understand that dating is only a test to see if that person is someone you could love enough to spend your life with, and if one person sees they couldn't, it has to end, and there should be no hard feelings if nothing deceptive or betraying happened.

Anyway, the best way to go about it is to be direct and honest. Skirting the issue and drawing it out will most likely be the thing that creates hard feelings. It should just be let out, and if he doesn't understand, that is his issue, and there is nothing more you can or could've done.
