I'm looking in the $3-5,000 range, something good on gas and capable of taking a fair number of kilometers (about 500 a week for work at the moment) but nothing too fancy.
my most feared price point ... is the "around $5K" one.
- its too low to come with any warranty
- if the car gets fucked in the first few months ... you spent too much buying it not to fix it
- and its still a used car.
my suggestion if you are ready to fork out that much ... put a small downpayment on an innexpensive new car ... like $1.5K ... and pay the small loan amount every month ...
even if you keep it for a few years ... you come out the same way as spending $5k out of pocket .. and you have no headaches of possible repairs, etc.
leasing a cheap car makes sense also ... heck, you can lease a low end Corrola for like $120/month with like a grand down.
I'm kinda thinking along the same lines as Lurch here. Doesn't a brand new Toyota Yaris start at something like $11,500?
Thirty-six miles per gallon. Could last you 10 years, easily.
