I'm a huge fan of dans clean vocals, and am trying to get into some of his growling.
I have Moontower, which i enjoy, and am thinking of getting into Edge of Sanity now. however i still like to hear his clean voice.
I was told Crimson has clean vocals, so which one shouuld I get: Crimson or Crimson 2.
Mind the fact i want growling with some clean vox, as well as heavy and soft music.
thanks guys

Crimson II, in that case, as Crimson I is a bit more death metal oriented (but Crimson II is a lot heavier, in terms of sheer drumming and guitars).

As for Edge of Sanity albums, I'd go with Purgatory Afterglow first (sorry Dan, I think that was your best... heehee), at least after Crimson II. And then I 'd go to Crimson I, then Unorthodox. All of the Edge ones are great, the exception being the album without Dan, Cryptic. And it's not just because Dan's not on it; the album is really fucking terrible. I liked Dread's guitars a lot, and even some of the tracks he wrote on Infernal (or that's what the music booklet claims), so it was a really disappointing album for me.

If you like combination clean and growling voices, I highly suggest Borknagar / Vintersorg (Vintersorg is Borknagar's singer's solo project). You can also pick up Elegy from Amorphis, which has an excellent clean and death metal voice contrast in that one. And of course there's always Opeth, who are buddies of Dan; they go without saying in this category.

I personally like Sentenced a lot for clean / growl singing, but a lot of people find them too poppy (Down and Frozen are probably their best albums for the type of singing you're looking for).

Once you get a bit thick skinned about the singing, you can move on to the good stuff, like Enslaved and Naglfar. :)

Thanks man, I'm alread a fan of Sentenced and Opeth, but i'll keep an eye (ear) out for the other bands.
Going out tomorrow to order Crimson 2.
Do the other albums EOS albums have clean singing???? Thats the problem where i live, cant just duck into my local cd store and have a listen, unless its pop or RnB :yell:

They have clean singing to different degrees. Purgatory Afterglow has a couple of songs that are partially clean and so does Infernal. Crimson I has three sections where there's clean vocals (or something like that), and Crimson II has it mixed all over the place. But if you don't buy Unorthodox based on the lack of clean vocals, you're really missing out on some of Dan's best work.

The good stuff is the growling, though. Dan just happens to have an awesome clean voice. :) Check out Borknagar / Vintersorg, especially Vintersorg's last release, it's mostly clean vocals, and the music is very good (although Borknagar's last album kicked ass too, and it's basically 50/50 clean/growling).

I would recommend INFERNAL for an entry to Edge Of Sanity...

The album itself is disjointed and does not work as a whole album, but it does have a good spread of what you could expect from EoS.

Not all tracks have Dan on (which is a shame), but he does display a varied vocal approach.

I get the impression that the band was being pulled in several directions at the time (was this where Dan left?) and it really shows on the CD, but there are some stunning tracks on there.

If you are going to download a couple of tracks, my suggestions for you would be perhaps "Black Tears" and the cover of Sting's "Invisible Sun" or Danzig's "Mother".

Favourite track for me...? "15:36" from Infernal. Combines both styles of Dan's vocals nicely.

Purgatory was my introduction to EoS, and one hell of a great way to get me started. Unorthodox is probably my favorite EoS album, but as far as Dan's clean vocals go, Crimson I would probably be your best bet. He uses them the most and employs many varied approaches, so it should be right up your alley.

"Losing Myself" (EOS - Infernal album) is easily one of my top favorite songs, I love Dan's clean singing there.
