ICARUS WITCH for PP

I think it's really a question of tone, though. Sure, it's a positive to discuss bands we'd like to see, but when it crosses the line into people implying (or straight up saying) that Glenn doesn't know what he's doing, it's essentially coming into his house and taking a shit.

I can't speak to how he reads things, but to me, that there are some posts that come off as enthusiastic and positive, and some that just come off as taking a potshot at his booking decisions.

I have never said he doesn't know what he is doing (not sure if you were speaking about me on that), also Glenn isn't in a band so to take something personal like an opinion on how good a band is or isn't is a bit much. Because he doesn't make their music why would he take offense? He puts on a fest of bands he believes in 100% and some of us don't like all the bands and that is just how it is. It's not his fault we all have varying tastes. It's just who we all are as attendees.

when i suggest bands i am doing just that, vocalizing as a long time PP attendee a band i would like to see. he can take that info and do what he wishes with it. But this a forum and ideas are to be expressed, i thought?

I don't have his phone so i cannot call and bug him about stuff. hahaha, which i am sure he wouldn't want any way, so this is the place to post ideas and i do it.

:)

Also, i guess something was lost in my original post and Justin mentioned it. When was the last time anyone bought a ticket to see the OPENING BAND specifically? Usually we are all buying tickets because of a headliner, etc. Most of the time the opener is someone new for us all to check out. So i was merely saying Icarus Witch deserve a shot to impress the hell out of everyone like they did to me the other night. :)

Nothing said about reading; problem is with forums is that people are always trying to hear a "tone"
Anyone with decent command of the English language is capable of choosing their words to convey things in a variety of different manners, and understands how the average person would read what they write. You come across as a reasonably intelligent person, so I'm going to assume that you comprehend what I meant and are just choosing to use the "Hey, I'm just writing, if people take offense it's on them" defense.

Anyone is free to take that path if they so desire, but it also speaks volumes about their desire to be right vs. their desire to be a productive member of a community and interact effectively with the people around them.

Edit: I'm not looking to turn this thread into an argument about the tone of writing or how anyone should or should not express their opinions. This is not my forum, and I don't have anything against Jeremy, Matthew, or anyone else. My point was that there's a line between positive/enthusiastic posts about bands they'd like to see, and negative posts outright questioning Glenn's judgment. In the interest of not getting this thread locked for going wildly off-topic, I'll leave it at that.

Just for the record i was being enthusiastic. new IW cd is awesome and their set in Raleigh was amazing. Great songs, great live band to back it up. :)

White Wizzard's new guitarists are amazing as well. that was pleasant surprise at how good they are now.

I have never taken that defense at all; matter of fact I always have felt if people get offended by what one says it is their issue to deal with and not the one who said it. Maybe that is just my satanic way of looking at things.
So my girlfriend stands behind me and reads the line, "Anyone is free to take that path if they so desire, but it also speaks volumes about their desire to be right vs. their desire to be a productive member of a community and interact effectively with the people around them." and her comment is "a desire to be brainwashed, but it might just be the tone". So I guess it is all what you what to read into I suppose.
Nothing here is meant to be offensive, in the great scheme of things it is only a way to waste time and we all know that.

When was the last time anyone bought a ticket to see the OPENING BAND specifically?

maybe not "specifically", since I'm entering my second year as a sponsor, but to say I was "ecstatic" about Beyond the Bridge replacing Above Symmetry would be an understatement, they are one of the bands I am looking forward to most this year, just like last years opener Haken was last year. :kickass:

I dunno, Dark Empire had a couple of people there who came to the recent NY show just for us.

Icarus Witch has always been a very professional, well executing live band. In saying that, the new disc does not even come close to the greatness that the 1st 3 did.
The change in direction should have had a name change attached to it.
...Still worthy of a shot at ProgPower though.
Does anybody remember that extremely blistering hot year when Icarus Witch was passing out stickers and other things while we all stood in a loooooong line to get into Earthlink? 2004 maybe?

There is nothing wrong with suggesting, commenting on what bands you would like to see at the fest. We are the fest, without fans buying tickets the fest doesn't exist. Just like the next one almost wasn't going to happen for lack of ticket sales. So the bands we want to see and will pay to see is highly relevant. And if Glenn didn't care what bands the fans would pay to see as the main reason to book most fest bands, he wouldn't have had a successful run.

that is partly true, the attendees, the faithful, are the reason why the fest continues, but also, this is Glenn's fest, he knows the marketplace better than anyone and books bands that he knows people want to see. Other factors ( the economy, natural disasters, terrorism, the price of tea in China), these are all out of his control. People (myself included) think with their hearts and not with their heads. Some of the requests (not to name names) I've seen from some people wouldn't draw flies, quite honestly. Just like some requests that I myself would love (Avantasia) but are wildly unrealistic from a financial perspective. Also, it's great to make suggestions, but just because 10 people ( 5 or 6 of which actually go to the fest) on this forum request a band they love, doesn't mean 1,200 people are going to pay to see them. Personally, I finally started coming to the fest in 2010 and I started sponsoring last year, but if the bands I request aren't chosen, I'm ok with that because I trust Glenn's business acumen enough to know there's a reason why.

To be fair though, we're talking about an opening band here. They add to the total package, but they're not the bands that are driving ticket sales.

This is also true, the openers are a great way to introduce a new band to the festival attendees, it just happens that this years openers are two of the bands Om most looking forward to, where to some people, they are the bands they skip because they focus on the more well known acts in the line up

By "not ready" I mean from a draw standpoint, not talent at all, and yeah Malison Rogue isn't there either, but who knows? In the end Glenn knows the marketplace better than anyone and I wouldn't second guess him. As for Arch Matheos, they sold out the Webster Theater in May, and I think they would draw well as PPUSA is their target audience, but in the end, if Glenn doesn't like them, they don't get booked.

Widow isn't ever going to be a band that draws. Widow is going to be a band that turns heads in a room full of people. Widow is going to be the sleeper that people are going to hear and think "Oh ... wait.. holy shit who is this and why have I not heard of them?"

As a drawing band, no, Widow isn't 'ready'. As a band that would absolutely, undoubtedly be the talk of the festival? They're already there. As an example, remember how Orphaned Land went over in 2006 (was it 2006?) no one really knew who they were or what to expect, but that's all anyone talked about was how amazing they were? That's what Widow would be.
