if you dont believe in god what is there to stop you from committing rape or murder?

Contrary to popular belief, morals don't rly stem from religion. They're beaten into us by parents, teachers, etc. and also they're somewhat inherent.

As far as your god argument goes, let's say that today, the Christian "God" came down and said to us "Hey, violent, brutal rape and murder are okay." We'd either be like "... You're not God" or denounce the religion altogether, because rapes is obviously wrong, and that's hardwired into most of our heads.

The problem with both sides of the argument, is that they're all opinionated, which is based on what we've been taught throughout our lives. Most of that stems from our parents and government system, which all rely on rules based on the biblical 10 commandments.

We are primal creatures, and the basis of the biblical 10 commandments was just a clever way to put our natural instincts into writing and law, and have people live in fear of breaking them. The wrath of God in the old testament was quite brutal.

Have any of you Christians ever even READ the bible? The old testament is filled with god-induced rape, murder and disturbing things that today would be worth jail time or death.

The governing parties use the 10 commandments as a base because the majority of people actually believe in those laws having been handed down from a superior being. It at least keeps enough people in fear of the consequences of breaking said laws.

myself
:OMG:

you didn't think of it that way, did you?

Well, to put it simple: I'm in charge of myself. I decide what's right and wrong. And I deside that I beileve in peoples right of ownership over their body, and consequently won't do anything with them without their consent. That includes raping and / or murdering them.
