Well I just picked up Forest Poetry and its not what I expected.I've only made it up to about the 10th track.Soo raw and discordant sounding I would think this has more in common with garage punk. Are all of their cds like this?

Det Frysende Nordariket is the only one I really like, it's a compilation of earlier demos and such. Forest Poetry seems OK, haven't really gotten into it.

I've found his production to get a little bit better as time passes, but not by much since he's using the same 4-track.

His Landscapes and Hardangervidda albums are AMAZING ambient. Highly recommended.

You think so?? Despite the fact I like Ildjarn a lot I think those albums are very weak. I can't stand people paying hundreds for that Landscape CD when you can buy cheap stuff like Vinterriket that is far superior than Ildjarn in the ambient matter.

His first two albums, Det Frysende Nordarriket and the selftitled one are not that monotone.
They have a somehow insane, but also living, pulsating, healthy and natural feeling to them.
Also, they are more unique and not so tremolo-darkthrone-esque.
I especially like the selftitled. Nordarriket is too fragmented and one actually had to judge the single demos on the cd.
Forest Poetry and especially Strength and Anger are his most monotonous albums.
If you want to give Ildjarn's bm stuff another chance you might purchase "Ildjarn is dead" (old demos and stuff you can only get for 70€ as originals are on that album - just the selftitled and nordarriket era), or the 1992-1995 compilation, which makes a nice "mix" of his styles.

Landscapes and the Hardangervidda albums are ambient.
I don't know Landscapes, but Hardangervidda is really great and i don't think Vinterriket can be compared to it.

I got the Landscapes album, not really my cup of tea, but the Black Metal stuff is worth a try. I remember an old interview where Ildjarn himself said that he wasn´t satisfied with the Landscapes album and he wants to get all of them back. As far as I know it was limited to 250 or 500 copies also, so I don´t know if you can get them easy.

Most Ildjarn is good in its own way. It took me a long time to appreciate though, needed a pretty intense listen to Strength and Anger in a particular mood to bring out its charms.

Really? That's odd...

Ildjarn is also, more than any other band I can think of, setting music. Listening to it in the dark, outside is a great start (even enough to rival Joined In Darkness).
