once my dad overheard a conversation between an illegal and an american. you know what was said? the illegal told the american how he was going to work here for a while, go back to mexico with the money he made here (which is worth A LOT down there), retire, and live like a king. while the other guy, the american, would have to work til he died!

When I was a teen, I worked as a waiter for a 4 star hotel in New York. I worked with Brazilians and columbians and they lived like bums and sent all their money home. My sister recently saw one of the guys I worked with and he has been living in brazil in a huge house, has a nice car and alot of money in the bank..... and he did it all making 2.33 an hour. Someone is always going to have to do the shit work. As long as the shit work can be done by illegal immigrants who are paid next to nothing, the cost of the shit work will be low to the rest of America. When you start forcing those industries to pay their workers a legal wage, the cost of those products and services goes up.
How much do strawberries cost where you live? 4$ a pound? Most of the cost of that fruit is in transportation and storage. The people who pick the fruits are paid next to nothing because the product they produce isn't very valuable. Are you willing to buy Strawberries at $15 a pound so that Jose can get paid more than the $20 a day he makes now?
What politician is seriously going to push for legislation that raises prices on goods and services that Americans have become used to (in our fat, lazy decadence) in order to benefit non-citizens and non-taxpayers?
It may be that the responsible thing to do is to raise the wages of those workers to livable money, or to force those farmers to employ American citizens paid at least the legal minimum wage. We'd have to accept that Strawberries are a luxury item that cost a lot. But that will only reduce demand hugely, and with fixed minimum prices, the only result is a drop in supply to match, as most of the farms would have to shut down. Jose, or his legal equivalent, would be unemployed or headed back to the shit country he came from in the first place, and neither scenario probably makes his life any better.

I don't know about the situation up there in the USA, but a lot of illegals in Holland are people that fled out of their country because they were politically or religiously surpressed, or because the country they fled from is in war.
So a lot of the illegals in Holland were in danger in their own country, but fled here to find a better future etc.
How the hell can you nót accept those people just because they don't speak "our" language??
(once again, I don't know if the situation is somewhat simular in the USA)

And Karen, I also agree, I absolutely hate seeing the Spanish language everywhere. It makes me feel like I'm somewhere else... and it doesn’t make sense... If I was going to Germany, I would learn German... not fly over there and just arrogantly speak English to everyone and expect people to understand and speak it back to me. Anytime I hear that "Spanish is our second language" it just sets me off into a small rage. And just like Metalkingdom said, I don't hate these people, and I dont care that they are working shit jobs, I even (to this point) sympathized over what shitty wages they get paid... but after hearing about the "sending money home and living like kings story" I, first of all dont buy it at all, think that it's total bullshit... If that actually works out... then holy shit... that is beyond fucked up.
Ultimately, I think there should be no borders in the world and you should be free to roam where ever you want... however, we have a good system in play here, so the borders are necessary, and in order to keep that system running smooth, we cannot allow anyone to enter the country without the proper documentation.

No, the problem isn't the language or any of the other things that most people in this country get frustrated with. The real problem is that the vast majority of these people have NO INTENT WHATSOEVER ON BECOMING AMERICANS!!! They have absolutely no respect for our laws, our culture, our people, our heritage, our history, and no understanding of the internal conflicts and struggles that we've been through to become the great nation that we are. How do I know this? I lived in Southern California for 15 years, and I've seen it with my own eyes day in and day out. Mexicans believe that the western United States is actually theirs, and they will stop at nothing to reclaim it. We are being invaded by a foreign adversary!!! Mexico has NEVER been an ally of the United States. We've actually been to war with them, several of the 9/11 hijackers came through Mexico to get here, and after 9/11 they were one of the last countries (along with Ifuckingran) to send their condolences. During their bullshit rallies on Monday, the people attending were urged to wear red, white, and blue and to NOT wave the flags of their home countries. That tactic is basically the equivalent of wearing the uniform of your enemy, then slashing his throat after you've infiltrated their base.
I'm no commy by any stretch, but I think that capitalism is a flawed system just like every other form of government. One of the flaws of capitalism is that people become greedy... so greedy that they become blind to anything negative that is born out of their greed. Americans should know that with cheap labor, there comes a very high price to pay in the end. The first time greedy people tried cheap (almost free) labor, the end result was the American Civil War which pitted brother against brother in a struggle over economics and slave labor in the bloodiest time in our history. It also left an entire race of people devastated, and who are still 150 years later struggling with their identity and place in American society. This time, I fear that we will totally lose our country. The day that a Mexican takes up residence at the White House, I'll be watching and lamenting from New Zealand saying, "I tried to warn you fucking idiots!"
