i'm possibly going to get my first car soonish

it has nothing to do with the make/model

oh! sweet child of summer's eve,
non-owner of french cars --
how peacefully in the bliss of ignorance thou sleepeth;
and knoweth not in thy slumber
the depths of despair plumb'd by those
whose so-called car refuseth to start
-- when in nordic winter's grim grip firmly held --
although verily! the key was turn'd;
how,
crestfallen, devoid of hope,
exclaimeth they thus unto the sky:
"fuck you and the horse you rode in on you french fucking IDIOTS i'll fucking kill everyone who ever worked in a citroen plant you pieces of absolute garbage shit"

Japanese are more reliable, but shit to work on. Do you have big fat Uhmerican appendages? You will smash them constantly doing basic maintenance.

American cars fall apart more often but most can be fixed with duct tape and bungee cords. If neither of those solve the problem, hit it with a hammer.

Both will fail you at the worst possible time. I've owned plenty of each to know this. Carry tools and an AAA card.

surely this is not true anymore

Probably depends on the car these days. Outside mechanical bits? Likely. 12" infauxtainment screens and digital cupholders inside? Doubtful.

I don't care how hackneyed the sentiment is, it's the g-d damn Boss driving around Nateville in a vintage CJ-5.

I cried red, white, and blue tears watching this advertisement. Well not really. But I did fart and think about beer.

My bitch.

V6 manual, right? That's the best Accord that ever was. Oh how I wanted one when I bought my old Mazdaspeed wagon. But you can't fit giant bass gear into a 2-door.

OR SO I THOUGHT.

I've Tetris'd all kinds of shit into a 2-door Jeep and a Mazda3 sedan. Funny what kind of room opens up when you start removing useless shit like a back seat.

here's a probably non exhaustive list of cars we've owned in the past 10 years or so

'87 nissan sunny
'91 volvo 745
'88 audi 100
'95 vw vento
'97 volvo 850
'92 mercedes 190
'92 mercedes 190 (yes, another one)
'86 toyota corolla
'99 opel astra
'96 vw golf
'98 seat cordoba
'13 citroen c4

probably some of the years are off and i'm probably forgetting one or two, lmao. i actually have had so many junk cars at this point that i kind of forget the order and how many there's been lol

right now i REALLY want to get rid of the citroen because oh my fucking god owning an eight year old citroen is SO MUCH WORSE than owning an 86 toyota corolla or whatever, jesus christ this flaming pile of french fucking trash makes me want to kill myself on a daily basis

1990 Volvo 940 Turbo Wagon (awesome fucking car, wish i could get another one)

2002 Ford Focus 5-speed (absolute GARBAGE, I will never own another American car. It was like driving a tin can. Engine lights at 50k, seriously felt like I would start rolling backwards on very steep hills. no power whatsoever, surprise surprise.)

2006 Saab 9-3 Aero Wagon (wonderful to drive, terrible to maintain. insanely fast V6 turbo. 100mph* on the highway felt like driving on glass)

2013 VW Jetta SE 2.5 (a good, solid car. drove 45k miles in under a year and half. aside from a bad wiper motor, no issues at all. was forced to trade it in because I obviously exceeded the lease mileage in a bad way after having a sudden change of job locations. my dad gave me a really nice set of snow tires and i drove through some CRAZY blizzards in this thing)

2015 VW Jetta SE 1.8T (basically the same as the 2013 but with a different motor. slightly faster and better acceleration. cheaper interior materials. had constant annoying electrical issues and started getting engine lights at 20k miles! the dealership said "the car seems to be working fine, so we don't want to take the thing apart to figure out the issues. it's too new". they literally said "its too new" to diagnose the problem. unfortunately turned me off of new VWs, but I'm starting to consider them again since I applaud their refusal of CVT technology)

2015 Nissan Frontier V6, 4WD Crew Cab (a bare-bones, straight-up fuckin' pickup truck that I bought for work purposes and then ended up not needing after 2 months. obviously horrible gas mileage, no power locks or windows, but goddamn that thing could rip up some snow. it looked cool and it drove well, but I just didn't need it anymore.

2018 Nissan Rogue SV (basically your standard, modern AWD crossover. built to look stylish and to drive safely in shitty weather. not built to perform well or to provide any type of enjoyment while driving. one of the worst CVTs in the game.. it became more tolerable as I got used to it, but I do not have any faith in the overall reliability of this vehicle. not bad for highway road trips. tons of room in the back, which is nice for a musician or someone who needs to move a bunch of shit. very decent stereo/speakers. HORRIBLE bluetooth reliability. strange water leaks and heating issues at 20k, luckily just a lease which is mature in a few months)

Will likely get a stripped down Impreza for my next vehicle. I need AWD but I don't want to pay a lot.

although i regret nothing in terms of ten++ years of driving junkerz i'm about ready to buy a real grown-up car

it needs to be:

1) one of the better japanese brands (subaru, toyota, honda) not the b-tier (nissan, mitsubishi, mazda)

2) a fairly spacious station wagon with a tow hitch

3) i need a 3rd list item here to set up the next joke

and preferably:

4) wd

this leaves me with basically these options:

* subaru legacy/outback
* toyota avensis
* honda accord

i dont wanna spend more than about 12000 amerikkkabux equiv and it's rather hard to find nice ones in this price range

i'll keep you guys posted
