LOSSLESS FILES HERE: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/324723/In teh mix.rar Results are included. Each mix has different guitars, same processing, same guitars on either side.

Hope this is alright with Unicorn. I decided to whip up a quick mix to fit around the guitars in the other thread. Didn't want to distract from that thread so here's a new one. The bass is synth, sorry but I don't have anything better atm, if anyone else wants to do a quickie, feel free and I'll slot it in instead.

Basically, one side of this mix has real guitars, one side has impulse guitars. Vote whichever side you think sounds better.

No Nebula in this. There is some EQ going on and that's it. They are both going through the same processing path. They are hardpanned and don't switch ever.

I got it wrong in the last test, but I think it may be a little easier here (or different rather. I prefer the real amp here, but I'm biased since I know which side it is).

if you feel the panning of the cymbals is throwing you off, here's a version with everything but the guitars in mono:

edit: just tried tihs blind and I still prefer the real amp. I did EQ the real amp'd guitars and then run the impulse'd guitars through that chain, so its still a little biased, but the reasons I prefer the real amp'd guitars I think are not to do with EQ.

Edit2: Just the backing: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/324723/Impulse vs Cab Backing.mp3
Tempo 145, one bar break at the start, then align the guitars. Mess around and mix as you see fit, I think there are two many combinations to make this a fair test.

I think having two clips would be better, since I believe people can have dominant ears? Which might affect this pretty much.

Do you mean one with the sides swapped, or one impulse-only, one cab-only?

I'm digging the right side more in this clip.

Is the difference in EQ processing different on both btw? I'm finding the frequency response more pleasing on the right.

The processing is exactly the same on both. But remember the frequencies were different to begin with. There was a pretty big difference in frequency balance between the impulse and cab to begin with imo, so try not to listen to that. I could mix each side differently but then that'd also be a bit skewed, one side might be better than the other. I could also curveEQ one to fit the other. OR I could just upload the backing track and everyone else can do what they see fit to judge, which might work better, because there's no 100% fair way to do this.

I mean have one clip with just the real amp, and the other with just the impulse (well, one with nebula too).

I think the right side sounds better..
I want to say that the right is REAL, and the left is IMPULSE..
But I was fooled on the other test..
I like the right side more.. that's what I voted fore..
But I'm guessing the left is real.. :S

Yeah this would be a better test if you made one with impulses only and one with cab only, and weren't the clips in that thread dual tracked and stereo? Using headphones and only listening to one side at a time I'd say right is real, left sounds pretty static and fizzy.

Just realised I can take your mono'd clip, put it in Reaper, set master to mono, and use the pan to check them out individually... How stupid of me not realising that before :)

Gonna vote for right too.

The left side seemed to have alot more going on in the low mids to me. I'd put the extra muddiness down to natural room reverb from a live recording. Which impulses did you use for this?

I'm just using the wave files from the other thread. The impulse is made from the chain that was used to record the live recording (convoluted response, pun totally intended).
So you can import the wave files from the other thread, line them up to my backing track, and mix away to see how they all respond, then do a blind test yourself, if you like.

I'll post the results later on, but if anyone wants to know NOW, PM me and I'll let you know.

i said right.... constant quack quack quack from left... tht's the best way i can describe what I'm not liking from it :S

thanks for doing this morgan c. without having read the comments what was different for me was that the left side felt more flat and the right side more dynamic.
so I think B is the real amp.

found that out too but I ended up using brainworx solo for it.

The right side is absolutely 100% the real amp beyond a shadow of a doubt, and yeah, this confirms what Jeff and Mike were saying however I think this difference was still apparent in the solo'd tracks.
