I absolutely detest baritone guitars, they sound like shit. I tried out 5 in the store one day. They had a similar tone to an elephant with unholy amounts of flatulence.

But at least it was unholy. I was thinking about getting a graphite bariton neck, but I don't know since I really haven't played any baritone specific guitars. Moonlapse, if you get started on the 1 string, three octave bass now, you'll be insane rich in under a year.

Put another way: Ibanez invented the 7 string cuz Vai wanted more strings. Then Korn came along and criminally misused it. :)
Soooo untrue! 7-string guitars have been around forever. Check out George Van Eps for instance. Ibanez didn't "invent" anything, Vai approached them with the idea of bringing it back in a modern way.

I personally don't like tuning too low for metal. I'd play a 7 string and drop if a half step, but I only do that because I still have the other 6 strings other than the low B in a "normal" tuning.

Metal's greatest albums are in E tuning, and all are heavy as hell. Look at albums like "And Justice for All" or "Master of Puppets," or stuff like "Peace Sells" and "Rust in Peace." The majority of everything from Priest and Maiden, etc. You don't have to be tuned down to play heavy music. To me, heavy music isn't defined by the deepness of your tone.
